Why did Disney wait so long to finally rerelease Sleeping Beauty until 1997?

I couldn't figure out why Disney took so long to rerelease Sleeping Beauty until 1997? Because my mom had been anticipating Sleeping Beauty's rerelease on video because she could never find the 1987 release. What made the 1997 edition of Sleeping Beauty special? From what I learned that after the movie itself was Once Upon A Dream The Making Of Sleeping Beauty and this version was THX remastered. Is this 1997 VHS version of Sleeping Beauty very hard to find and sought after the DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the film were released?
