Why concierge?

Help!

Aside from the assistance with PS and the snacks, why do you stay concierge? I cannot figure out if this would enhance my stay. I like doing my own planning and PS and stuff, and although the snacks would be nice, I'm not convinced that it would be to my advantage price-wise. (I'm kinda frugal, lol!)

What am I missing?

I think you're missing the desire (or need) to be pampered. no offense. It's just not for everyone.

Can you expand on the "pampered" thing? I am sure I am missing a key element here. I am all for endulgence and pampering!!!!

Well, I've never had the service at WDW, but it's the idea of someone else taking care of the little things. You get personal check-in away from the front desk. You go to concierge with all of your questions and concerns. They remember you and take care of things for you personally.

Also, the food is more than just snacks. It's breakfast (which could cost a lot depending on how many people in your family), then it's afternoon snack, and then evening appetizers (that some people eat for dinner) and then cordials in the late evening/early night.

Thanks for asking the question, because I've always wondered why people pay so much money for concierge. If I were more well off financially, sure, then I'd probably have no problem paying that much. But it seems the average person too goes concierge at Disney - by the look of the resorts board, it seems many, many people do this. Hopefully we can get some answers from those who opt for concierge, because I'm curious too.

Unless I'm staying in a DVC unit, I always stay concierge anymore.

This is why:

I like the private check-in. Nothing sucks more than spending five or more hours traveling, to get to the hotel and have to stand in line for another half hour or more to check in. With concierge you simply tell the guard at the gate or the valet/bellman, or both that you are concierge, and they'll take you immediately to the lounge or your room (this varies by resort.) If the room isn't ready they takeyou to the lounge where you can relax and have something to drink or nibble on, and sit in a comfy chair while you check-in. If the room is ready they take you right to it, and when you're ready you can go to the lounge to meet the staff and check-in.

The service is personalized. They know your names and greet you as you come into the lounge. They remember you from visit to visit, they know what you like and dislike. Some of them keep track of your birthdays and anniversaries and you'll recieve either a card or phone call at home on those days. If you celebrate an occaision while styaing with them you'll get a cake and card or bottle of champagne and a card as appropriate.

The rooms are often in better condition then some of the rooms on the non-concierge floors, and often have some of the best views. The concierge floor is a private floor or area with keyed access. It keep the transience and noise level in the hallways to a minimum.

There are bathrobes in the rooms, which saves on packing. There are also upgraded toiletries and room amenities, such as free in-room fridges. Also automatic turn-down service each nice. It's so nice to come back to a freshened room. They do more than just turn-down the bed. They replace used towels, take out the trash, close the drapes and leave a soft light on. It's very welcoming.

Of course there is the lounge. Snacks, appetizers, cordials, soda, breakfast, wine, in some cases bottled water you can take to the parks with you. It's also a nice place to relax in a "homey" atmosphere where you can mingle with other guests, watch a little tv, etc. Some of the lounges have fireworks views.

There are other perks, which vary by resort. Free stroller and wheelchair loans, the Sunrise Safari, the ability in some cases to score hard to get PS's, the best seats at restaurants, etc.

Having someone take care of all your room requests and PS's in advance is wonderful. If you do it via e-mail they will send back a list of all the PS's and the confirmation numbers so you can verify if you wish. I've never had them mess up anything on me. It's also nice to have them take care of things like floral arrangements, gift baskets, etc. for you.

There are so many other reasons to stay concierge. But if you are looking for value you can quantify with actual hard costs, it won't happen. Much of the cost is for the higer level of service, which is harder to place a value on, as it's subjective in nature. For people who are willing to pay for pampering, then it's something you should look into. If you are as the OP says "Frugal", it's probably not going to be "worth it" to you. To each his own. It's definitely not for everyone.

Thanks, ducklite, for the Concierge recap. We will call the GF Concierge level "home" as of next Monday, the 14th, for 6 nights.

DH has a conference there and with my travel agent discount, our Concierge room will only cost us $20/night than the conference room rate (which, of course, was significantly less than the rack rate).

All in all, we get to be pampered and remain "frugal" at the same time.

DS, DD & I are warming up for the Happy Dance while DH is looking forward to every-other-day massages in the Spa!!!

What Ducklite said.

Concierge is about convenience.

It's not a way to save money.

A strict budget-concious family probably will not find concierge service attractive, and certainly not worth the cost.

For those who are willing to pay a little more for a little more convenience (quicker check-ins, someone to take care of your schedules and PSs), concierge is an option.

Can anyone tell approximately how much more it costs? I know it would vary according to resort and time of year, etc.. but just approximately? Are we talking big bucks here??

Ducklite ~ your post was a work of art ~ excellent.

I just wanted to add that not only does the concierge make your PS's ~ often you are recognized as a concierge guest and receive the best tables with no waiting ~ as opposed to making PS's yourself and being told there is a 30 minute wait or you can't have a table by the windows etc... and being given a flashing coaster to wait with

Concierge can get you into full restaurants ~ with no waiting ~ I was told there was nothing at Boma until 8:20pm. Mentioned this to the concierge ~ she made one call and I receive a 6:30pm PS ~ went down to a mobbed restaurant with hoardes of people and we were seen straight to our table.

As for price ~ there are different levels of concierge varying resort to resort ~ some are better than others, some more expensive than others. For GF, BC, YC, BWI you are looking at 100-150.00 a night more... for AKL, CR & Poly approx 100.00 a night more... WL & S/D anywhere from 40/50 - 100.00 a night more. All these rates are approximate.

It is hard to put a price on convenience ~ to me it is worth it. I have MS and can't do long days a a park ~ I use the lounge often to sit in a cool place and have a drink and a rest - it is a great alternative to sitting in your room.

You also meet nice families to chat with and the CM's are nice to talk with too (as long as they are not too busy) There is a TV for the kids to watch Disney movies.

I also travel with my young daughter so it is great to have somewhere for an instant breakfast, drinks all day ~ she is safe to go there herself to get a snack, and we love being back for desserts before bedtime.

I hope everyone gets to try it at least once!

Generally a minimum of $100 per night over the regular rate for a room in that resort. In otherwords at the AKL, it's $100+ over the rate for a savannah view room. At the Polynesian it's $100+ a night more for a garden view concierge room than a waterview non-concierge room, etc.

DW and I will be staying Polynesian LV Concierge for the first time this fall (empty-nesters, son graduated from U of Mich woo hoo), and the appeal to us (above and beyond what ducklite so wonderfully described) is that we hope that it will provide a bit more of what we go to Disney for. To be honest, for the $300-500 rack rates for a deluxe room, we could go elsewhere (Las Vegas, for example) and get a suite at a full-service Casino Resort. But there is an intangible 'something' about going to WDW, staying on-site at a deluxe that (I feel) can't be found elsewhere. Maybe it's a good dose of non-reality, of letting go some of the worries of the outside world; could just be knowing that a whole lot of people are worrying about our happiness for a change.;) Whatever that 'je ne sais quoi' is, I believe that Concierge will provide a good deal more of it.

One other thing that doesn't get brought up as much - Concierge is a way to shelter yourself a bit more from the madding crowds. It may sound a bit elitist, but to be escorted to the Concierge building, with your own check-in desk, lounge and 'staff' of helpful CMs, cordials at night in your own 'gated' longhouse - it's a far cry from the Pop-Warner nightmare stories at All Stars.

We'll see how we feel after we return, but I'm betting that we'll be hooked both on the Polynesian and Concierge.

Although I didn't ask the question, ducklite & >>^..^<< answered this so terrifically! I keep trying to explain to our friends who are traveling to WDW about the concierge experience and they just keep saying they don't see the benefit. I guess I haven't been explaining it very well & am going to print this post to show them.

Also--i'm going to keep ducklite's description next to my checkbook for when I make those monthly transfers over to my vacation account. Gotta keep saving for those 8 nights in concierge-lol!

Thanks to everyone for posting on this thread-it is making me remember why I booked at concierge level to begin with! :)

ducklite said it all! (as she so often does  -- ouch!)

Concierge is a splurge! It's all about service and convenience. It's not intended to be a "good deal" in strictly monetary terms. After all, if the resort lost money on a concierge guest compared to a regular guest, do you really think they'd be doing this?

If you stay concierge, you may have the misfortune to run into others who are trying to "get their money's worth" out of concierge through rude and boorish behavior.

Personally I am generally happy being a "regular" guest, but tried concierge at the Polynesian a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. It's definitely worth giving it a try.

Thanks, >>^..^<<, for the insight on the PS made by concierge vs. conventional methods....

When I spoke to the concierge to book our itinerary, I mentioned either a breakfast or dinner in the Castle for DD, knowing full well that 6 weeks before our trip was waaaay too close to get anything.

He called me back with PS for BOTH breakfast and dinner at CRT!! I was completely taken aback!! We decided to go with the breakfast. I couldn't figure out, for the life of me, how he got those PS other than the Concierge planners have special considerations when doing the itinerary planning.

Good to read of other instances where this has been the case.....

We stayed on the concierge level at AKL last year and it was a simply wonderful experience. We're doing it again at Thanksgiving.

The thing that stood out in my mind the most was their ability to get us into CRT for breakfast a week before our trip (during Easter Break, no less).

They told us that all of the restaurants hold a few last minute priority seatings for concierge guests. It made our trip and we look forward to more magical surprises next time.

I think that "splurge" is a good way to decribe my reasoning for trying Concierge. We are staying at the GF Lodge Concierge (I know despite the mixed reviews) on the FTP package. For the 7 nights it was $300 more, and seemed like the right time to try it. With three kids I figured the breakfast alone would make up a lot of this, but certainly couldn't justify it otherwise.

I have been very impressed with my concierge contacts so far. They have been very courteous and replied to my e-mails within 24hours. They've put together a list of all PS requests with confirmation numbers along with other requests. This is our first Concierge experience, so we'll see if it's worth it.

I think I may have been misunderstood with my comment about being "frugal." We're not a super budget family or anything, and I knew it was in no way a cost saving measure or anything, I was just curious as to what it really entailed. This is our first year with APs -- we waited until DD was tall enough to do a lot of the rides before we started going.

For me, I enjoy making my own PS's. I kind of enjoy the "thrill of the hunt" for the PS for Cindy's and such. The robes I can do without.

I do think I would enjoy some of the other things, though. The lounges and relaxed interaction with other people would be fun, and the views (for fireworks where permissible) and such I would also enjoy. We have been fortunate enough to have not experienced long check in lines first hand, but I have seen them and avoiding them if possible would also be worth it, I feel.

And pampering -- who can say no there???

I think we may try it for the December trip, just to see if it adds any magic for our holidays. Dh is a pretty reserved person, and enjoys being a regular guest, kinda just blending in rather than standing out, but we can deal with it, lol!

Thanks for all the information -- I never expected this much of a response, and I truly appreciate it!:D

The robes I can do without.
Heh heh heh. Just wait until you wear one. You'll buy one for at home. Heh heh heh.

To truly enjoy the pampering, you need to set aside time to spend at the hotel. If you're a commando family that opens and closes the park, then concierge probably wouldn't be your best bet. After quite a few Disney trips under our belts, we find ourselves now enjoying the hotel almost as much as the parks and work "non-park" days into the itinerary. Because we are at the hotel more often now, I enjoy spreading out and relaxing in the concierge lounge as opposed to sitting in the room.

For priority seating, there are blocks of tables that are set aside for concierge and reservations made through them will list you as a VIP. As a previous poster stated, this helps with no waiting in line and usually a great table.

I have only experienced Disney concierge service at the Grand Floridian, but I can tell you that the ambience there is something special. The lounge on their balcony overlooks the floor of the main building. At night they have a piano player that alternates with an orchestra and it was so nice sitting in that quiet, private area, sipping a glass of complimentary wine while listening. What a wonderful way to end an evening.
