On the way back to our resort from the park today, A man began asking the people next to me if they were DVC. "Seems like everyone is now, " he said..I looked down at my DVC sling bag. When the couple responded no, he then went in. "We thought about it but it's not a good investment. I invest in actual real estate...blah blah blah" I tuned out after that. I bought in because I wanted to save on my vacations over time. My vacays are completely separate from my investments.
This is not the first time Ive heard this kind of remark. If you don't think DVC is for you despite your coming here yearly, why disparage those who think it was/is worth it?

It doesn’t have anything to do with DVC. They put down others to make themselves feel superior. They never grew up beyond High School.
That was the vibe I got. If life is so great for you, why attack others for their choices? Even the people next to us didn't really want to keep the convo up with him, but he kept going.

Because they're insecure and feel the need to put others' choices down in order to feel better about their own.

People like that aren't worth your time.

Don't worry about it. As a "real estate" investment, my 3 DVC contracts are worth WAY more than I paid for them years ago. I could sell now and make a large profit and consider the last 10 years free vacations. So don't let him get to you, he probably has a Hilton timeshare he can't unload...
Something is only worth as much as you are willing to pay, and the price of my families continued happiness is vastly greater than anyone will every understand. I've been able to give all of my siblings, their kids, and my parents free stays they would never have been able to afford. Worth so much more to spend that time with people I love doing something nice for them.

It’s not an investment…. at all…. an investment is something you purchase with the expectation of future profit.

It’s a right to use accommodations at specific Disney properties for a set number of years and an obligation to pay dues to maintain those properties.

The ability to resell the contract prior to expiration does not make it an investment. It just makes it a better way for some people to pay for their vacations.

I would’ve told him it was so great my uncle left me his DVC because times have been tough since I got laid off years ago but at least we can still eek out yearly trips to WDW on our credit cards 😂

Wow! That is the first time I've heard of something like that. I have had people ask if we are DVC and then they ask lots of questions. DVC tried to recruit me in the late 1990's, so I know how to sell it even though that is not the point. I guess I explain things in an enthusiastic manner, but also logical and point out drawbacks.

In 2022, it happened at the Miller Road quiet pool at OKW. A woman asked the question and then I had everyone in the pool around me...LOL. It was pretty funny and I have no idea if anyone bought a contract, but they were sure interested. One woman from GB took my email and we corresponded for awhile.

Your guy was a dud. If he knew how much fun we all had, he might be singing a different tune. Dud!

My only regret is not jumping in earlier … we also get tired of the resale people talking about how much money direct purchasers like us ‘lost’ ..we didn’t ’lose’ a damn cent .. We did it the way we wanted to do it, don’t regret it for even a second

As a resale owner, I’m glad people buy direct! You can’t have a secondary market without a primary market. And neither direct nor resale make sense for all people. So it is good both exist so we can all get what we want or need.

I’m way too self conscious to talk about DVC in public though. I am definitely not wearing DVC gear or talking about it where others can hear; I know it is an expensive option that many people won’t be able to swing and it would make me uncomfortable knowing others know how I spend my own money.

I'll bet DVC has sold a LOT of contracts over the years via overheard conversations. I know Mom and I bought ours in 1992 after overhearing a young couple talking about OKW (then the Disney Vacation Club Resort) on the monorail on the way to EPCOT when we were staying at the Contemporary. The exit area to Spaceship Earth at the time was a big DVC kiosk, so we made an appointment to tour the next morning. DVC picked us up at the Contemporary, and about 2 hours later, we were DVC Members, having our photo taken in a hot air balloon prop, and enjoying ice cream sundaes at the Commodore House..

Really makes no difference to me how anyone does it but for some reason it does to some …

They’ve probably lost a few too, to folks learning about resale after making a purchase who then rescind. Fewer than you’d think but I’m sure it happens.

Thanks for this. It completely shocked me because it came from out of nowhere. And how nice that your contracts have "appreciated". That's an even better blessing. We bought in for the memories and to hopefully save on a vacation. Selling at profit would be icing on the cake!
