Why can't people on eBay follow the rules?

Not that ebay is the ideal, happy place..but i will tell you that the only way that a seller can get a 'bad record' is if they have been reported. The first step would be reporting it.
Its ebay's business, so I guess they can throw off or penalize whom and how they choose. I dont think the OP is looking to get people suspended, but rather to get an account of what happened. If it's a repeated behavior, then it needs to be noted.
Its more important to CALL than it is to open a case. If the seller is high-volume, the case will not be as effective.
Policy violations are reportable offenses. All that other stuff is handled thru cases, where ebay gives a little more leniency. I dont think you could continually violate policy and continue to have an ebay or paypal account.
In recent years, ebay has slashed and burned and cut bait with bad sellers. They continue to keep the pressure on by raising seller standards.
Its all over the web..long-term sellers being booted.
Ebay is well know for being hard on their sellers-much harder than on the buyers.

I sell on eBay.

First - contact the seller - see what they are going to do? If they agree and do refund your money, make sure to leave feedback once everything is finished. just list the facts, and outcome

if seller ignores you... or won't refund.

Open a case against the seller who sent you the knock off, this is against eBay practice's. This way you can get your money back, and eBay can track someone that is not following the rules, also leave feedback that states you are unhappy, just list the facts, and outcome.

For buyers that gives you some crazy lowball offer. I just laugh and decline. If I counter offer on an item, I give one counteroffer and that's it, if I am not offering free shipping, I make sure to write in the notes, plus cost of shipping listed. I don't go back in forth. If someone offers back and comes within 1.00 or so I will consider it, again checking if someone slipping in free shipping.

I have learned not to take it personal on the best offers. Just hit decline and move on. Really those type of people are just that way, do you really want them as a customer?

For anyone that suggest the " off the records transaction" report them right away. This can get you kicked off eBay. In my opinion this is opening yourself up to bigger problems.

You can set the "best offer" to automatically decline any offers under X
$ amount. It keeps you from even seeing those low ball offers. Ebay doesn't even notify you if it's below whatever amount you enter. They just decline for you.

You can also set it up to automatically accept anything over X $ amount too if you want.

Honestly, I prefer straight up Buy It Now w/ Immediate payment required.
Another issue with the "best offer" is that if you CAN NOT require immediate payment if you negotiate a price. I was screwed over last year by a buyer of a pair of Cubs tickets who negotiated with me for hours, we agreed to a price, we both accepted the "best offer" agreement. I waited for payment but he changed his mind ... the SAME day as the game. My BIN had an immediate payment requirement because I couldn't wait forever for payment, but that was turned off when the best offer was accepted. It was too late for me to sell them to someone else and I ate $80 worth of tickets. I reported him as a NPB but that didn't do a thing. He too was a seller!

Let me also chime in as an eBay member sine the 1990's no longer sell but too much buy :rotfl: ( still kicking myself for not purchasing the stock when it was first offered)

Definitely report anyone trying the " let's make a deal under the radar " Communication is key with any transactions there Yes eBay will answer with a phone call when you need to talk to them...amazingly fast actually

I pay immediately after an auction and always always click on " add a message "
Even if it is only to say " I really can't wait to get this You made my day " puts a little personal touch and reminds people that in this day of everything done via computer that there is a live person actually buying your stuff

I've been fortunate with sellers It doesn't really matter to me who leaves feedback first As a seller I used to always do it when money was received not everyone does that though

and i'll add, just to rib the op, not to be mean..
that if you are willing to sell stuff for $4, dont be mad when they offer you half. even if the item were $100, they'd offer you half.
take the best offer option off on a $4 item, unless you are willing to take 3 and consider 2.
good luck!

OK, so I reported the buyer *and* I blocked him from bidding again. I had also already opened up a case against the seller last week. He has until tomorrow to respond but I have heard nothing so far. I'll escalate it as soon as I can.

The "best offer" thing is now automatically put on your auctions. I forgot to take it off. Once I got the offer, I was willing to negotiate but he offered me less than half. I am not "mad" about the offer itself, but the low-ball offer in conjunction with the offer of fee avoidance did annoy me. I received another offer of $1! That one I rejected without comment.

I'm a relatively new ebay user, about 2 years now, but I use it sparsely. I'm mostly a buyer. Back on 5/19 I won an auction. I kind of took a gamble because I REALLY wanted the item but the ebay user hadn't had any feedback since 2008 (it was all positive at that time). My item was estimated to arrive on 5/27 but she didn't even ship it until then. Not only that, but she still hasn't given me positive feedback. Since I paid in full with PayPal 1 minute after winning the auction... doesn't she have to leave feedback for me first? I don't plan on leaving her any until I get my feedback. Someone correct me if needed since I'm not a regular ebayer.

As a seller, I leave feedback once the item has arrived at its destination. That's just how I choose to do it. I also tend to wait until I have a few to do and do it all at once.

There are many many sellers and buyers who never leave feedback of any kind. It's very frustrating to bend over backwards for a customer and then they don't have the decency to leave feedback. Nothing you can do about it though.
