Why can't I swim in the lake??

well, I'm not completely sure that it is relevant here but... last year after retuning from WDW my SIL discovered that my 2 year old niece had Pin worm, and the local children's hospital said it was the 3rd case they had seen after a stay at Disney in that month!!! It was most likely from the beach at CBR... note to self: children NOT to play in the sand...

Someday I'll tell you about the life cycle of a pin worm. That's a story for FW after a couple beers.

Come On! I just drank from Bay Lake on my last visit to the Fort and other than the areas of flesh that are being eatin' I am just fine.:rolleyes1

The ban has to do with LAWSUITS and not some stupid ameoba.
Unfortunately, this "stupid amoeba" has cost a young man his life http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-bk-amoeba-death-092309,0,1235755.story?track=rss

There may have been a number of reasons for the closure of River Country, but I'm sure the threat of a lawsuit from a death like this, was at the very least, a concern.

Amoebas, gators and snakes are good enough for me. Love those resort pools. Enjoy you vacation. :cool1::banana:

well, I'm not completely sure that it is relevant here but...

Everything is relevant here. But especially amoebas, microwaves, crapping, pin worms, beer, otters, kungaloosh & peacocks. I've been reduced to wearing Depends or staying out of 7-11's.

I used to swim in Bay Lake in the 70's & I'm fine. I also spent a lot of time at River Country. I am patiently awaiting for the report from the doctor explaining why everytime the microwave is running I crap myself. I doubt that has anything to do with the amoebas in Bay Lake

That is because you put the microwave in the bathroom!!

Don't they run the triathlon in the winter months when the lake water is cooler???? Me thinks there are many reasons there is no swimming in Bay Lake and all of them have to do with money. Lifeguards, lawsuits, gators, snakes, otters, water craft and lion and tigers and bears oh my!
As for River Country, you're talking money again. It just wasn't profitable for Disney to transport folks from the Outpost to the Settlement and back. No parking lot for folks to drive themselves.
What's really frustrating is that with all the Imagineers at WDW, not one can come up with a profitable use of River Country? Build a few cabins, campsites, something. :confused3

Amoeba isn't really that dangerous. It kills less than sharks a year. Disney probably did close everything due to money and lawsuits but they keep water sking open because they can force people to wear the nose plug and sign a release. Imagine forcing everyone to sign a release before entering a lake or River country, that wont happen. They can force 12 people a day to sign a release to waterski though. Also in the winter months the water will get colder but not cold enough to kill all the amoeba.

The land where river country is located is under the control of disney "attractions" not the Fort Wilderness resort. You might think it may be simple to reallocate the acreage to the fort and do something useful with the land but again WDW would rather pamper their better guests at the other resorts and vacation clubs.

I never thought about that, but it makes sense. Great insight, and.....WeLcOmE to the camping board. Don't take any of us too seriously unless the post involves beer or kungaloosh. We are always serious about beer and kungaloosh. No kidding!! :thumbsup2
