Why can't I get DSL?

Can someone please explain to me why I can't get DSL and our friends one street over from us can?

I was under the impression that it has something to do with updating something. Which is obviously very helpful.

We haven't been able to get it the 2 years we've lived here. Will we ever.

I realise these are things I should be asking the phone company. And I have, at least 8 times. No one can ever give me an answer. It's VERY frustrating.

Seriously, you may have JUST exceded the distance DSL can go. It must be no greater than "X" number of feet from where the signal originates. I don't remmeber anymore how much "X" is, but it is around 15,000 ft.

Could be other reasons, but that is one reason.

That's probably it. We've noticed the phone company putting in these new big transformer-looking things in the city next to ours. I'm hoping that they are what we need, and that they are going to add one close to us.

We have the same problem. Because we live out in the boonies (well, not really, but the phone and cable companies seem to think so!), we cannot get DSL unless we sign up with one particular ph. company. This particular ph. company is already pretty much God out here (their company also does all the gas,electric, is the only cable co. you can get out here as well as the only ph company) and I hate having to give them more of our money if we don't have to. So I'll have to settle for dialup until their stranglehold is relaxed and somebody else is allowed to come out here for that sort of thing.
