I've use Turbo Tax online for several years. Can someone tell me what the difference is in the online and the software you buy and install on your computer :confused3 If they are the same I'm wondering why one would spend the money for the software. TIA

One reason I buy it is that it comes with the state program..... and I like to have the disks. Sometimes you need them, if you have to file an amended return later. (this has happened to me a couple of times, I file for me and DH, and 3 of my kids).

I think it saves money if you are filing multiple returns...

TurboTax CD/Download

* Free Federal Efile Included — There’s no additional cost to efile your federal tax returns. Efiling your state personal return(s) costs $19.95 per efile.**

* Filing Multiple Returns? — It’s easy. Prepare unlimited federal returns and efile up to five federal tax returns (the limit set by the IRS) at no additional cost.

* Want to Print and Mail Instead? — No problem. Prepare and print as many additional returns as you like for no additional charge.

* Efiling a State Return? — Efiling your state return costs $19.95 per state efile.** Note: You can efile only up to three state returns per federal return.

Efiling Your Business Returns

* Efile Included — Federal and state efile is included with TurboTax Business and Business State products (each sold separately).

* Filing for Multiple Businesses? — You can efile up to five federal returns at no additional charge.

It depends on the kind of return that you have to file. Some of the online programs you have to pay to use as well. If you have a totally simply 1040EZ with little to no deductions, there's no reason why you should pay to file.

I have a couple of babysitting kids, so I have to file a small business return...so I have to pay for that. But better than the hassle of trying to do it myself and certainly better than paying a tax pro.

I have used Turbo Tax for years and i do 5 or 6 returns. Last year it wouldn't download and i had to do each return on line. This year I can't transfer any information unless i do it online too. I was going to do my sisters online as she does 1040EZ, but it won't transfer unless i pay for the basic. ding multiple returns, it pays to buy the disk. doing just one, do it online, but it is a bit slower to openit up and make changes if you like to work bit by bit.

you can also get a great deal on the version that you have to load where as the online version, I have yet to see it on sale.

I don't know about the online version. But, if you use Quicken, you can import information from Quicken directly into your tax return. I use the free download version of Tax Act That way I have a local copy of my return.

I have also occationaly seen copies of tax software at the Dollar Store. They will do your federal but charge a bunch for your state.
