Why buy multiple contracts?

I have noticed on this board that some members have more than one contract... sometimes at the SAME resort. Is this because you added-on later? Are there other reasons to have multiple contracts in the same place?

When we bought 400 points, we had them split into 4 contracts, 100 each for a couple of reasons, the first is that in case we ever wanted to sell all or a portion, the smaller contracts sell faster and sell for more per point than larger contracts. The second reason was to be able to give them to our kids. We can give them 1 or 2 contracts more easily. Another reason is that when you add on via Disney or via the secondary market, that also creates a separate contract.

We split our BLT contract into two as our needs for size of our room will change after our daughter reaches the age when she doesn't wish to vacation with us. At that point we can sell a portion of our total ownership but still have the number of points that we want.

Oh, that all makes GREAT sense!! Is it difficult to combine your points from different contracts when you need to use more than you have in a single contract? And... same question about ease of combining points when you own at DIFFERENT resorts.

Thanks so much for the advice and info!

:) Many folks get multiple resorts to get the home resort advantage at 11 months, too. So if your favorite time to visit was Flower ad Garden you may want to own at BCV so you could have the acces to Epcot for F&G, and SAB. If you wantd WLV at Christmas it would be easier to own there. It is popular becasue of hte decrations and both resorts are smaller so you need to own there to be able to book before others at 11 months.

At 7 months it is not a problem to combine different resort's points for a stay. We have 1 major contract with a March UY but there are 18 parts to it and theycover 6 home resorts.

We have 300 points at SSR, 150, 100, 50 points each. They were add ons. All the same use year. It will be easier if we ever want to sell some point(doubt that) and some day when we give them to our kids.

:) You can only combine points at 7 months for a reservation. You can also transfer points from different contracts once a year per contract. You can however do a split stay at 11 months from a reservation using 100 (just an example) at BCV for so many days, then have a reservation at the same time at VWL for the next few days. That is how people combine points. You cannot combine points from BCV and VWL at 11 months to get one villa at BCV for say a week with 200 points. I hop ethis makes sense and someone will come along shortly and probably explain it much better than I.

:) It is important to note that some people just cannot make reservations over 7 months out. At seven months all points are equal. So you can have purchased at a resort that was less expensive--use them at 7 months---hope to get something you want and/or WL for something else. If you cannot make a reservation at 8-11 months out then go for the cheaper contract--that just makes sense. DVC works best for those who can book farther out to use the home resort advantage--at 7 months home advantage goes out the window and you just book where you can. A home resort garantees (more or less) that you will have a reservation there at 11 months, then at 7 you call back to see if you can switch--which does work. You can also go on a waitlist and see if that happens.

We have 3 contracts at BLT, 130, 50 and 30, because we bought them at different times.

Because they are all under the same membership, the function as though it was one BIG BLT contract. It even shows up that when when I view my vacation points in my member account. It simply says "June 2011 -- 210 points".

We own at OKW, BW and VB. Our initial purchase was at OKW. Eventually we added on twice at OKW. Next two add ons were BW. My husband and I visited VB for a long weekend and absolutely loved the resort. We bought an add on contract there to get the 11 month window. Most of our trips are at least 10 people and we need/really wanted that beach cottage and it was amazing.

I have 250 points in one contract, I wish I would have split it into 150 and 100. That way I could sell one off if my vacation needs change.
