Why be at rope drop?

Yup - fastpasses. It's not just "I get my first fastpass ride earlier". It's "I can have an earlier window for every fastpass, and may even get more fastpasses than people who start collecting later".

[As an aside, souinds like an interesting simulation to program ...]

Some people wait an hour for rope drop, run to a ride and think they had no wait. I say they had an hour wait. :)

Still, getting there early is better.

I totally agree with this. I've done both. I wait about 10 minutes after opening. I hate that crush and rush at rope drop. Getting there within minutes of opening is plenty early and less stressful.

We've made it to Magic Morning a few times so even earlier then rope drop and it's the best!! One morning we got there and got to see the park open and that was so much fun for us. Then on my last trip with just our youngest we got to Magic Morning on a Saturday so 7am and got into the park with not a lot of people and by 11am we were wondering where all the people were and found out we were one of those lucky ones LOCKED in the park while everyone else was not let in at 8am because of a bomb scare on March 3rd. No lines for Dole Whip.
The locals don't usually show up for rope drop so the park is less busy and then they slowly start coming by 11am so then the park is much busier.

If you are a WDW vet, rope drop can be especially cool, because I don't think they have it there. At least they didn't the one time I was there - we were kept out beyond the tunnels.

I like rope drop, but if you find the crush intimidating, remember that what's really important is to get there within 10-15 minutes of opening so you can get the benefits of a (relatively) empty park for the first couple of hours.

Coming in at Rope Drop maximizes the time NOT spent waiting in line. You can accomplish all of FL in 45 minutes or so if you go first thing, plus retrieving 1-2 FPs for later in the day. People can wait 45 minutes for Peter Pan in the middle of the day.

If done properly, you can hold FPs to all of the major rides in DL by 10a. Like HydroGuy said above, the windows are so much shorter, mostly because people are more concerned with riding the rides as opposed to getting FPs, simply because the lines are minimal.

The reason we do Rope Drop EVERY time is because we can do all of FL, and 2 turns on BLAB, while also securing ST and SpcMtn FP before heading over to DCA at 930. This sets us up for the rest of the day in Tomorrowland, while eliminating FL for the day.

Anytime we bring "amateurs", (we're the "pros"), I show them FL around 200p, when the place is a zoo. I tell them THIS is why we do it the way we do it.

I say every minute in the park prior to 11a is worth 5-6 minutes after due to crowds. I secure all my FPs (or multiple) and get the slow-loading rides out of the way. We can take a break in the middle of the day (if necessary) without worrying how the break will affect us. We're done with all the work by 12-1230.

We will NEVER not do Rope Drop again. Not worth the time for me.

Why do rope drop? Because getting there at rope drop, combined with passes to ToonTown Morning Madness, let us get an amazing video of Mickey Mouse just hanging out on the corner. Watching my 4-year-old rushing up and hugging Mickey with absolutely no one else in sight makes that video so special to me. :)

I think to make this point you need to be accurate. And my experience is hardly anyone (usually no one) is there an hour before rope drop. 20-30 minutes before RD is usually fine. And with that 20 minutes you can save hours later in the day.

On days like June 15 and for probably most of this summer, folks will be there extra early for DCA (! - yes DCA :scared1:). But that is the exception and not the rule. And the RD line for DL will be all the shorter because of it.

There is definitely an electricity in the air before the rope drop that is great! I have always felt it was just part of the experience to be there early and see the park fill up. There is also the added benefit for a no wait chance at your favorite rides :)
