Why are premium car rentals cheaper than full size?

I have been on a few rental sites and the premiums were cheaper than the full size and even one intermediate? Why is this? I guess I will book one but wanted to know how this could be true?

Supply and demand. If there is a high demand by business travelers (who are mandated by their companies to book midsize/fullsize cars) then they may have a large supply of unrented premium cars.

Also, many travelers book via phone specifying the specific car type, or book via their airline (when phone reservations asks if they would like a car rental as well), so they may not know about the cheaper premium cars.
