Why am I suddenly getting a rash from my wedding rings?

I have been married 6 years. About 3 weeks ago I developed a rash under my wedding rings. So I took them off and let my finger heal, and then put them back on this weekend. Today the rash is back. The rings aren't tight - as a matter of fact I have been losing weight. Why would they suddenly be bothering me?

Did you clean your rings in a new ring cleaner?

Try taking a cup of boiling hot water with a little bit of dish soap, and let your rings soak in it for about 30 min. Hopefully, whatever is causing the rash will be taken away by that (plus, it makes them SPARKLE like crazy!).

It sounds like maybe your body chemisty has changed. I'd take them off for a little bit more. When the rash is totally gone, try to wear them again, but only for short amounts of time. You might be able to get used to it again, or this might be permanent. I don't know.
As always, I'm not a doctor, I just play one on the dis. ;) :teeth:

It could be the hand soap you are using getting stuck underneath. Also sometimes if I eat food with too much acid in it like oranges or tomatoes I get a rash from the rings.

Are you using any different hand creams, lotions, or soaps? Could be the residue from any of that combined with the friction of the rings, especially if they are looser now and moving around.

Figure out what new soap, shampoo, cleaner, etc...you got 3 weeks ago. Perhaps then you can find your answer.

Agree w/ nuke...probably getting stuck under your ring or weight loss is causing rings to rub or combo or both!

This was pretty much my first thought as well. Even if you didn't clean them with something new it could be another irritant that has stuck to them. If they still bother you after this then it could be like someone else suggested and that your body chemistry has changed.

Are you pregnant? Have you had any surgeries recently? Those types of things can mess with your body and make you react differently to otherwise normal items.

Just my two cents....

This happened to me also. I ended up having an allergic reaction to my rings that I had worn forever and to my watch. I put clear nailpolish on the inside of my rings and on the back of my watch. ( I have to reapply every few months because it comes off).

I don't know why it works but it does. Good luck :teeth:

What metal are they made of? If it's white gold, perhaps the rhodium plating is coming off and you're having a reaction to the nickel in the alloy. You can have them re-plated. Are you having a reaction to any other jewelry?

When this happened to my DH it was because of soap getting stuck under the ring. He has to be really good about rinsing.

Hope you find an answer soon!

:)

It is the beginning of seven year itch.

I was going to say the same thing, LOL. I haven't been able to wear my rings for a few months because I keep getting a rash and we've been married almost 7 years. :rotfl2:

No new soaps or lotions. I did use that jewelry cleaner that comes in the red jar a few weeks ago - maybe I didn't rinse it off enough?

The rings are 14K yellow gold.

Nothing health wise has changed - no pregnancy or anything like that.

Maybe I will try the cleansing solution that someone mentioned and then wearing them again after the rash heals. If that doesnt work I will try the nailpolish.

I go through this as well. After I had my first dd, this happened and I couldn't wear them again until after dd #2 was born over three years later. Tried over and over and same thing would happen. I would just wear them for special occasions. After dd2 though, have had little problem with them. It happens every now and then, but doesn't last long. Just happened last week in fact and I left them off while we were down in Disney, so I wouldn't lose them.

This has only happened to me three times and each time I was pregnant.

Are you sure you aren't pregnant?

Glad I found this thread. I found a few ideas I hadn't thought of before.

This started happening to me just weeks after our wedding. No problem when I wear the band which is plain, but whenever I wear the engagement ring I have trouble (I think it's because dirt or some irritants of some kind keep getting trapped in the setting).

Anything will irritate it -- any moisture under the ring, from water, sweat, lotions, soaps, you name it. At night if my finger swells up a bit I get a rash under the ring.

To simplify things I only wear my rings now when I leave the house. I hate it because I said I would NEVER take my rings off except to clean them, and I hardly wear them at all. :sad2:

Im pretty sure....I guess it could be possible but highly unlikely...I did just have my normal monthly visitor.

Another one who couldn't wear any jewelry when pregnant not even my wedding band.

Use a Q-tip and rub a little bit of rubbing alcohol under your ring. It may be a water retention problem under the ring and the alcohol will dry that out.
