We decided last October to purchase a miniature dachshund - our first family dog ever and really the first dog that I've ever had (or at least that I remember). Anyway, I didn't think I was a dog lover at all and was a bit worried about having a dog and especially one in the house. But I'm here to tell you - I love my wienie dog! He is the funniest dog and so fast! Who else has a dachshund?

My oldest DD is head over heels in love with ANY dachshund!!! We had one from the time she was 18mos to a little over 5 years old when Tallie (smooth-haired red mini) unfortunately passed away. DD has obsessed about wienie dogs ever since. My inlaws have 3, my Sisinlaw has 2, and as of 2 weeks ago, we have 2 again. This time they are long-haired, and DD is over the moon.

Not only am I in love with my dachshund but she is in love with me too!!!
She is the most snuggly, cuddly dog I have ever met! I never have to call her because she is pretty much always right next to me!

We :lovestruc our dachshunds! Cricket is 17 but still going strong. Dixie is 8 and thinks she's a youngster. Love them both to pieces...

We also have a beagle, Maya, and a new beagle puppy on the way. I'm a dachshund girl, but after having the beagles....it's kind of a tie.

I was going to post of pic of Max but can't figure it out. Max is a chocolate and tax miniature dachshund and is almost 10 months old. He cracks me up every time I give him a bath because he gets so spastic and runs all over the house!

Please don't flame me. These are real questions I've got as I'm doing research on dogs that would suit my family.

I've heard dauschounds (sorry for the misspelling) are not the best dogs for kids. Is that true? I also worry that they might show aggression towards non-family members. Is that also true? I had a childhood friend who's dog was so mean to me I'm very timid about trusting the breed. But that may just be the way this one was raised. Almost like a person. Rarely saw the dog walking as the mom always carried it around like a baby.

I really want a kid-friendly dog that is low maintaince (little shedding) for a small living space. Also one that will not bite others or show aggression.

Just need honest answers and I really do not mean to insult anyone's beloved pet. Please forgive me if you think I am but I'm not. I promise.

We have a miniature dapple female named Lacy and she is very cuddly and a lot of fun.
I have a 2 y/o & an 11 y/o and Lacy is great with kids.
She is the happiest dog I have ever seen.

I will answer honestly for you.

As far as my dachshund, the older he has become definitely the more aggressive he has become but not towards everyone. My daughter is 15 and he's been fine with her, although some of her teenage friends (especially boys) he barks at. He loves to play with younger neighbor kids and has not tried to bite them. However, he is VERY protective of my family and has snapped at a couple of people. It is very inconsistent tho - some people he doesn't mind at all and some he barks. This has bothered me a bit because I'm unsure how he will react. Although we've never had a problem with Max around small children, I'm afraid to bring him around my neices and nephews. That being said - I know other people that have never had an issue with their dachshunds and they are very gentle. We've been told that Max's behavior would improve if he is fixed so we are considering it. Also, we are considering getting a second dog for him to play with.

Here's a pic of my miniature Max

This little guy was a stray. He showed up at my Mom's, out of the blue. We were visiting for a family reunion and he showed up one day and made himself a new home. My Mom lives out in the middle of nowhere. So, we think someone dumped him. We made every attempt to find his owners but fortunately couldn't find them. He is just the sweetest dog. And as you can see, my 92 year old Grandmother loves him. His name is Sargent Papi. If I didn't have 3 cats he would have come home with me. My Aunt now wants to get a girl dachshund so we can breed them.

No flames here! I don't have children but I WAS concerned that when my ten year old godson came to visit over Christmas break that Roxie would not get along with him. Roxie likes to relax, lay on my lap, be cuddly and she is like my little baby so I thought that there might be some jealousy but Roxie was GREAT with him! They ran around together, slept next to each other, and she gave him a TON of kisses. So godson came back for another visit last week and she was the same way with him, they are best buds. My bf's niece is three and she really pets and hugs and carries on with Roxie and to my surprise Roxie doesn't have a problem with it.

Now as a PP stated, she is very protective of us. She is the only one of our three dogs that barks at people when they come in the house but she has never bit or nipped anyone, only barked. She also is the leader of the two other dogs (despite Roxie being the smallest one). When one of the other dogs does something wrong and we yell at them Roxie will bark at them too. When our Husky jumps on the bed and we tell him off, Roxie forces him off the bed.

OK I don't want to sound like a crazy dog lady but I will share this despite how it sounds...I really believe that Roxie can feel my emotions. When I am sick she will lay on my chest and not let the other dogs play around me, there is someone that comes over often that I really don't care for and Roxie won't go near him (she will bark at him but won't sit on his lap or anything). I know it sounds really nutty but my other two dogs aren't like that.

I hope this helped a bit! If you end up getting a doggie I hope you share pics!!

Roxie sounds like a real sweetie, KandD.

When we finally make our decision you can bet I'll share it here.:cool1:

That's not crazy at all. I think our dogs understand a great deal about us because, if for no other reason, than they spend their whole lives just hanging out with us, watching us, and learning about us. Your doggie has learned to recognize a lot of things about you.

I love my doxie too! If there is one characteristic that the entire breed has in common, it's that they love to cuddle. Not your typical lap-dog cuddling, but under the covers, under your arms, in your face cuddling. It's crazy!! It's a good thing ours doesn't shed, or we would be ingesting hair daily. Oh and they all hate rain and snow. Does ANYONE here have a doxie who does not hate rain?

They are fast! We enrolled ours in a "weiner dog race" last year to benefit the SPCA or something. We had him all trained and ready. But when the announcer said "go" he said..."na, I don't think so.":laughing:

We don't have a pure dachshound but a mutt with some in him. He is by far the cuddliest, funniest, sweetest dog we have ever owned. We never had a small dog before until he was given to DD but we are totally hooked. Love him and his cuddles to pieces. He will sit on the back of the coach and actually "hug" you with his whole body. Awesome when you are feeling low!:lovestruc

We have two
I am loving the pics -especially the grandma one!

They are not a sure thing with kids -especially very young ones. We had one we had to give to my sister (doesn't have kids) because he was a little aggressive with my children.
The word Dachs -comes from the German for Badger. They are bred to be fierce little hunters who would go in badger dens.

The two we have are very sweet -but one of them is not crazy about other kids (she barks and doesn't come up to them) the other one doesn't meet a stranger and loves everyone.
Neither bite.

Beautiful doggies Clarabelle!! I love the black and tan doxies. I am interested in all kinds of dog breeds, but I really think I'd just get another doxie when the time comes. They are just fun, interesting, and animated little companions. I've seen them described as "clown-like" on many occasions.

They were bred to be diggers, orginally. Ours doesn't dig, but many do. As a result, they tend to have very long nails. And I have NO LUCK whatsoever cutting our guy's nails. We can bribe him with food for one or two clips, after that, I think he would not hesitate to bite us. He hates it that much. As sweet as they are, I think ALL small dogs tend to have a strong bite reflex. Because of their size, it's almost necessary for defense.

About dachshunds and kids, it depends on the dog. The one we had when my oldest DD was 18 mo was the sweetest thing ever. DD would hug her neck so hard I thought the dog's eyes were going to pop out of her head. Dd would release her and Tallie would lick her face. She would stick Tallie in her little jeep and drive her around. They were inseparable. The dog never even growled.
Now my inlaws have one that is grumpy. She doesn't like new people and has bit someone who have came into the house (repairman) on the ankle. He had on boots, so it didn't break the skin. All their other wiener dogs have been great and very friendly. Even the grumpy one, though, leaves the kids alone. She just avoids them. If she sees one coming, she runs the other way to hide. She did like my DD4, and we think that is because she has never been very "in your face" with her. DD lets the dog come to her and is very calm and sweet with her.
