<font face="comic sans ms"> I have to eat black-eyed peas today for luck. I'm not even superstitious, but I do like family traditions. So, I will make my mom's Hoppin' John recipe. Here's how:

3 strips bacon
1/3 cup chopped onions
1 1/2 cups canned blackeyed peas
1 1/2 cups cooked rice
1 cup diced ham
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Place bacon in 1 1/2 quart microwave-safe dish. Cover with paper towel. Cook in microwave oven on full power for 2-3 minutes or until crisp. Remove bacon. Drain all but 1 Tablespoon of bacon drippings from dish. Add onion ; return to oven. Cook on full power for 2 minutes or until onion is tender. Stir in remaining ingredients except bacon. Cover and cook at full power for 3-4 minutes or until hot. Crumble bacon and sprinkle over top. Serves 4-6.

Every new year should start off with a recipe that contains both bacon and ham. It's a great way to start off with healthy eating habits. ;)

What are some of your traditions?

We're having blackeyed peas, collard (sp) greens, and ham, all for good luck, good health, and money in the new year.

One other major tradition/superstition that my family as is that it's bad luck for a female to be the first person to call or visit your home in the new year. :jester:

Right after midnight all of my father, uncles and male cousins start calling family members and wishing everyone a happy new year.

No real food traditions here, except making a huge breakfast for myself and watching the Rose Parade in my big fuzzy robe with Bandit's head on my lap.

I avoid the football games (well, except for the Fiesta Bowl this year, cause the Buffs are in it), so I usually go to a movie. Today I've got a movie (B&TB in IMAX) and a concert tonight.

I should be a complete wreck tomorrow. So what else is new? ;)

On New Years Eve and New Years day everybody in Holland eats 'Oliebollen'.
An 'Oliebol' is deep-fried pastry with raisins and apple - served with icing sugar. I like them best when their hot.
My father makes the best 'Oliebollen'! But, he is in New Zealand this month so I bought my 'Oliebollen' this year. They were OK, but it's not the same...... :(

:( My family has few-to-none 'traditions'. :(

Ed and I are working on making some, but we really drop the ball each year. We have started many traditions, and continued few-to-none. :(

One thing we've been doing since moving into our castle (as Dan would say ;) ) is that we mark the kids growth on their door jams on their birthdays and on New Year's Day.

Oh, and I use the champaign bottle from our 1999-2000 NYE to burn a candle on NYE. The bottle says 2002 all over it. :)

Oh, and I have a tradition of breaking New Year's resolutions and new traditions. ;)

The black-eyed pea recipe sounds delicious!! :)
