whoo hoo got my lens back and it works great

it's film 28-80 1:3.5-5.6 macro so guess that is still not very wide in digital land ( and not sure what the chip they put in to upgrade does) so probably would still need 18-125....but wondering would this cover the same as the 50mm f1.8? or since it is macro is the 28 mm only f3.5( not sure what all that 1:3.5 means)

or is there a reasonably priced alternative to the low end of the scale like 17/18-50mm if i think this would be all purpose "kind of"( need to play with it a few days to see.) thinking it would probably cost as much as the 18-125 anyway

The numbers "3.5-5.6" are the widest aperature settings for this lens depending where you have the zoom adjusted to. On your 28-80, f3.5 is the widest aperature setting at 28mm and f5.6 is the widest aperature setting at 80mm. As you zoom in towards the 80mm end with this lens the lens gets darker.

The 50mm f1.8 is a much brighter lens than this.

The "reasonably priced" alternative for a wider angle lens is the 18-55mm kit lens. About $80.
