Will be moving to Orlando area soon and working from home, worried about numerous power outages that would interrupt my work from home capabilities. Anyone work from home in Florida and has any suggestions for a generator?

Power wouldn't be an issue, but keep in mind that even if you have a generator the internet still may be out for awhile. During Matthew I lost power and hooked up my portable generator to my TV, modem and router. I had TV but it took a couple days before the internet came back (power came back before internet did), so be aware a whole-house system might not spare you from lost work days.

We're in NJ and installed a whole house Kohler generator after Hurricane Sandy. We're on well and septic, so it's nice to have water if the power goes out. As PP mentioned, internet may be out even if you have power via a generator. My suggestion for that would be to have a mobile hot spot as a back up.

I can't speak to Florida, but when Rita hit my in laws house in Texas, the internet and cable never went down. Phone was out two weeks. the electricity was out 7 weeks. My father in law had a small generator wired into just the outlets that were for the refrigerator and freezer. It went on automatically when the power went out. Unfortunately, power surges before the power went out destroyed the compressors on both the refrigerator and freezer. So they lost both those appliances and their contents, and had to replace their roof. They were pretty luck really, the total damage was less than $5,000

we're not in florida but we have a whole house. we have a generac and have been pleased with it. it's wired to the house, turns on automatically and won't switch off until it detects a solid (non surging) reconnection with the normal power source. we opted for it vs. a portable b/c we didn't want to have to keep gasoline on hand (and in the event of major weather issues didn't want to have to venture out to get it/restock it). ours is plumbed to a large propane tank with more than enough fuel for extended periods of time. longest we've had to use it continuously was a period of 1 week.

I don't think OP is talking about losing power during a hurricane. A portable generator would work for that. There are areas here in Tampa that lose power from heavy rains (not even a hurricane in sight). Areas of Orlando may have this as well. A little over a year ago, my friend bought a home in South Tampa (from North Tampa) and she became frustrated with how often they were losing power, so did like a lot of folks in South Tampa and got the whole house generator that is installed usually next to the A/C unit and is a big box like an A/C unit. A lot of people who have relatives with special needs also get the whole house generators.
