Who to complain to?

So we just got back from a week long trip down to the BWVs & it was wonderful (well except for that hurricane). I had rented points from a very helpful DVC member & the whole experience was great. The studio room was in great condition & it overlooked the grassy courtyard right in front of the lobby area (rm 3065). So now for my complaint. On the 22nd (my designated day for trash and towel service) I had hung the Do Not Disturb sign on the door since we were getting up late (TL didn't open until 10 am) & then switched it to the Make Up Room side when we left. So they came & left towels etc. Then they left towels the next day & the next. We were confused by all of the towels but thought that maybe they were trying to make up for the fact that the room smelled like smoke (I had called them three days in a row to deoderize the room since it smelled - even though it was a designated nonsmoking room). So when we went to check out (a day early because of the hurricane - so they got their points & were able to rebook the room for that night if someone wanted to check into it) we had a $30 bill for trash and towel service.

The CM at the front desk called housekeeping & they said that I had requested three days of service - which I didn't. I requested one day - on the day that I was supposed to have the service anyway. So they take off $20. I asked about the other $10 & the CM at the front desk tells me that they have it listed as the 21st on the request. Now usually I would doubt my memory because it's pretty sucky, but I actually had written down a schedule of what parks we would do on what days & so I knew the only day we slept in late was on the 22nd. I was really nice to the CM & told her that I didn't want to be a pain in the butt, but that I knew it couldn't have been the 21st because of the above explanation. She got all huffy & said "well it says the 21st here" so I pointed out that housekeeping could have made a mistake & she just babbled on about it being a housekeeping issue & how it said the 21st yadda yadda. So I asked for an address that I could write to in order to complain - which made her more huffy & she started saying how I would have to wait because she didn't even know if the $20 refund would go through. So in the end they credited me $20 & charged me $10 and she gave me the address for the BW & told me to address the complaint to housekeeping.

Do you all think I'm petty for wanting to complain? It's not the money, it's that they treated me like I was lying & trying to get away with something. $10 in the whole scheme of a Disney vacation is nothing - I could lose $10 & not notice it. Also, was there some other visitor there that kept requesting towels & never got them because I kept getting them? Not to mention that I would have liked to throttle the person in the room before me that couldn't walk down 2 flights of stairs to smoke outside or at least go out on the balcony. The bathroom was the worst. I think that the smoke was embedded in the shower curtain because the steam seemed to bring out the stench. And when I called about the smell the front desk didn't seem to care too much (not that there was much they could do since all the studios were booked) & they just sent housekeeping to spray a cinnamon smell to cover it up.

Anyway, so I was wondering if any of you fabulous DVC Disers know of a person at the BWVs that I could direct my complaint to so that a human being actually reads it. I don't expect anything to be resolved by it, but it would make me feel a whole lot better! Thanks in advance!

Not too sure about the $10 but I wish they would ban smoking altogether at all of the Disney resorts ...but that’s another debate at another thread.

Did you leave the "service room" tag hanging on the outside of the door all the time, or bring it in after the day you slept late? I could see how this could have been misinterpreted by housekeeping as a request for more towels.

As fas as the 21st vs. 22nd, I really don't have an answer for you. I'm not sure you could write to the member satisfation person, since you really are not a member.

Would I "complain"?
Well, I would definitely bring it to their attention whether I'd get the money back or not.

A lot of people would say... "It's only $10.00 what the big deal?"
Well, I believe that I am not "special" and if they are doing it to me they are doing it to others. If they do it to 100 people a month it's $1000.00!

Now THAT I don't like. Personally I think, my 11 year old neice does a better job cleaning then mousekeeping, so I don't think they deserve a $1000.00 tip.

Also, a tip for people, pack a travel bottle of Febreze (sp?) or pick one up at the grocery store when you get there (LOL...along with
lysol) to help freshen up the room.

I didn't even think of Febreeze! The woman from housekeeping was nice enough to leave the deoderizer can for us to use, but then when they came to do the trash & towel, they took it back :(
I don't mind if people smoke - they should just do it in the designated areas. I had dreams the first night that the neighbors were smoking & it was seeping under the door & I was trying to stuff towels under the door to keep it from coming in. We were in a dedicated studio, so this couldn't have been the case, but dreams never make any sense anyway. Then I woke up at 5:30 & all I could think about was the smokey smell so I sat out on the balcony. My mom died last year, at the age of 57, of pancreatic cancer - which has been linked to smoking - and my dad continues to smoke & so I think all these unresolved issues were bubbling up in the middle of the night. After that experience, if my father thinks he's going to smoke in my new house he's got another thing coming!

They actually took the Make Up Room sign off the door & put it inside the room for me so it wasn't on the door. I think they must have gotten the room number wrong or something because someone must have requested the towels on the other two days!

I hate to be a complainer - esp when I'm not even a DVC member, but the whole transaction really annoyed me. Thanks for all of the advice!

I also know that smoking is addressed on another thread, but if I had that room they would have had to move us. My son is asthmatic and even old smoke residue will trigger an attack. I agree that smokers need to be more considerite if staying in NS room.

I ALWAYS call the manager at the very first sign of a problem or when a complaint to any CM doesn't get me anywhere. I don't mean that I would do it in a nasty way, but whenever we've gone straight to the manager, the prob is taken care of (hasn't happened that often 1x or 2x maybe). As for a smoky smelling room, I'm out that door, hubby has asmatic (sp? sorry) problems, and smoky smell would ruin his vacation! (Not to mention the breathing thing - LOL).

Anyway, if you cannot find a place to write to (sorry I cannot help with that), call BW directly, ask to speak to a manager, it doesn't matter if you are DVC or not, you were a guest in that hotel, and a manager should respond to you as just that. I'm the type of person that just needs to be heard, even if it doesn't get my $ refunded, I'd want it on record. Sorry you had an issue, it does take away from the "magic"

It would still be nice for service issues and problems experienced to be forwarded to management in order to improve service in the future for the whole resort.

Sorry, don't know the address to use. I think the member satisfaction address has been posted before.

I would probably leave out the part about renting and just state that you (your name should be on the reservation) were a guest (no need to specify paid guest) of dvc member (fill-in member name) and that you noticed the following service problems...

Good luck.

I agree with the complaint about charging you for what you did not order. However you should have asked or called the front desk about the extra towels after they appeared the second time. I know this is not your fault and you should not be charged.

As for the smoky room - i went thru this in June/July and I went right up the ladder and the final word was that a non smoking room is a request only. I have a severe allergy and my daughter has asthma but when they tried to put her in a smoky room I could do nothing. Luckily someone was leaving early and a non smoking room opened up. It also does not matter when you check in because I was there in another room, checking from 9am until it was ready. I did specify I needed one because of medical reasons, which I was told was on the reservation but it still did not matter.

I have been to some hotels that are all non-smoking and how refreshing. I really wish that Disney would go all non-smoking within buildings. This would still allow people to smoke on the balconies where it won't ruin someone else's vaction. I am sorry smokers, I used to be one for many years but gave it up cold turkey about 18 years ago.

There is no excuse for bad service. However if your money was returned, due to the fact that everyone in the Orlando area is very stressed right now due to 3 hurricanes I would cut the person some slack and give them the benefit of the doubt that they were having a bad day.

If you were there during the hurricane there is really no way anyone can expect service to be at it's normal level of performance.

As to the smoking situation, as more and more people want Disney to limit the smoking rooms or do away with them it is only going to get worse. People are going to smoke, you take away the smoking rooms and they will smoke in NS rooms.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being petty. I'm planning on writing a letter tonight pointing out the good and bad & I'll send it off to whom it may concern...

jcanary - Thankfully I don't have asthma and actually smoke never bothered me until my mom died - now it pisses me off that there are people (like my parents) slowly killing themselves despite the fact that they have family members that might like to have them around a while longer. the bell hop was saying that other hotels charge a guest if they smoke in a non-smoking room & that he thought Disney should do the same. That's a bit much, but I don't see why the person couldn't just go out on the balcony.

Sammie - I wouldn't complain about the front desk woman b/c she wasn't wearing the regular front desk uniform, so I have a feeling that she doesn't spend a lot of time at the front desk. I can see how she might have interpreted my complaints as wasting valuable time so I let it go & just asked for an address. As for the smoking rooms - after watching my dad try to quit a million times - unsuccesfully, I know that there needs to be some kind of accomodations for smokers - I just wish they would leave the non-smoking ones as non-smoking! My father would be just the type to smoke in a NS room - he makes me irate!

What happened to the saying "the customer is always right"? Although I suspect that too many customers took advantage of that phrase, I think the CM's attitude was inexcusable.
