Tomorrow it will be just the 5 of us for Thanksgiving dinner, here at home, and I'm happy about that. I'm focusing on not stressing, not feeling like I HAVE to make all sorts of dishes and sides to make this a festive holiday meal. I really can't believe that it's the night before and I haven't started anything yet, but the food is here, DH and SIL have said they'll get the dining room straightened out enough for a sit-down family meal, and DD has promised to help with sides and desserts.
Back when DH was in grad school, we would always go to his family in Ohio for Thanksgiving. He is one of 7 siblings, many with kids, and it wasn't uncommon for Thanksgiving dinner to have 30 or so in attendance. It was always a fun, wonderful weekend, giving us the chance to see relatives we only saw maybe once a year. What I didn't enjoy was the drive. I love to drive, don't mind road trips, and this one was about 7 hours each way. However, the route was Syracuse-Buffalo-Erie-Cleveland, and a bit further. That is NOT a trip to make in late November; sometimes the weather made driving downright treacherous! As much as I miss his family and those wonderful, crazy weekends, and wish they'd happen again, I am happy to be staying home this year.
