My dd (9) would really like to do the horseback riding at Ft. Wilderness. I am looking for feedback on the experience! Is it worth it? Are we guided by a "trainer?" My ds (7) and ds (2.5) would be left back at Ft. W. with my DH. What could they do to pass the time while we are riding the horses?

Thanks so much!

E.

I have never been, but I hear on these threads that it is really tame and if you are use to riding horses it may be too tame and disappointing. I own horses and that is why I have not done this here.
I also think this would be a good way to experance a first ride(because it is so tame), I bet the sights will be really nice too.
For youre DSs and DH there is a petting zoo at FW. I bet they would love it.
Hope this helps, and you have a great time.

They also have pony rides for young kids at the petting farm at FW so your other 2 could do that while they wait for your trail ride. That way they wouldn't feel left out of not riding horses! We haven't done the trail ride, but I do imagine that it's pretty tame since they probably don't want to risk injury, but I bet it would be for for a child even if you thought it was a little too slow.

Thank you for your responses! I think it would be perfect then...my daughter is fearless but the tamer the better for me...lol:eek:

My ds (7) is going to be a little sad about not being able to do the trail ride, I believe you have to be nine but the pony rides and petting zoo might make up for it!

Thanks again,

E.

My dd and dh went 2 years ago on a trail ride there. They both really enjoyed it! We signed up for the first one of the day and they were they only ones, so they had a private ride! It is very tame but since they were the only ones they did do some troting(sp). Everyone working there was nice and very safety conscious.

We did the ride last August. We had a good time. Of course, the skies did open with torrential rains, completely soaking us! But, the guides were terrific. The ride was somewhat boring if you've ridden before. But, my 10 y/o dd hasn't ridden more than a pony and dh doesn't ride at all, so it worked out great for them. We paid in the range of $30 pp if I remember correctly. But, since they had to cut the ride short (by about 15 minutes) due to the severe weather, they completely refunded our money.

I have done it. I used to ride horses (back in my school days....won't say how many years ago that was!) so I was used to them. The trail we went on was pretty straight and level. The horses were very calm and gentle. It would be a great ride for kids, and for inexperienced riders. Not scary at all. For experienced riders, it was nice, but maybe a little.....boring??? I don't know if that's the right word. I wouldn't say that I was bored. It just wasn't as exciting as it would have been in another venue. I'm not planning on taking my kids this time, but I think they'd enjoy it. Only my daughter has ridden once, but the others are totally inexperienced.
