Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

Joe got me one for this past birthday and I love mine. It's pretty awesome!

In terms of backlighting, I think the very idea if a little silly. Books aren't backlit so having this thing backlit is a complete non-issue for me. Plus, I prefer having a battery that lasts a couple of weeks (with the wifi turned off) is far more important than a back light.

The code for $50 off at Amazon is OPRAHWINFREY and I think OPRAH_WINFREY works, too. I tested the first one, and it worked fine..free shipping. The code is good until Nov. 1.

I believe I read that none of the books are over $9.99, the newspaper subs are about $13/month.

I hope they have another code closer to Christmas when people start asking me what I want. I can't justify buying this for myself at that price.

Does Barnes and Noble sell them? I was just in there yesterday, and I forgot to check.

Something tells me you can't use this in the bathtub.... ;) That's where I do a lot of my reading. I'm so tempted to buy one but I'm afraid it wouldn't get enough use.

Me too ! I am a big tub reader ! Besides that the only thing holding me back is right now i get 10 points per dollar for books I buy at Barnes and nobel through My Points....and Amazon doesen't participate.

I'm glad you asked. I've been admiring the Kindle for several mos now, but I don't know anyone who has owned it. I didn't realize the prices were so much less. This may be a good investment for me, since I go through books so quickly.

Can you download children's books to this also? My DD8 loves to read, but I don't know if she could use this or not. I think it would be worth it if we were both able to use it.

On the other hand, I don't spend much money on books. We go to the library often. Of course, I've pretty much read through all of my favorite authors there...

Hmmm...I'll have to think about this for Christmas I guess.

We got my husband one for Father's Day this year and he absolutely loves it. He takes the train a lot and also travels a lot and uses it daily. He gets newspapers, magazines and books, but also can download documents from his email on it.

It really came in handy today for my friend--her kids needed a book for a project due Tuesday and couldn't find the book anywhere. We were able to download it on to his Kindle page on amazon and they could read it from there.

barnes and noble doesn't sell them. But they might have another kind of reading device. The Kindle is an amazon product.

I have been thinking of getting a Kindle for a while, but don't know anyone who has one...it's great to read the first-hand reviews here. :thumbsup2 I would have to get over my hang-up about not having an actual "book" in my hands. There's something about cracking open a new book...the feel, the smell...I love it. I would definitely miss that.

Here's my question, though. I have, literally, hundreds of books. I love books...and I keep all of them (with the date I got it and, if applicable, the name of who gave it to me written inside). The specs for the Kindle say it holds approx 200 titles. Sooo, then what? Do I have to delete a book to add another? Can I get a storage device to hold them? Sure, I won't fill it up immediately, but I *will* fill it up, and then what? :confused3

Yes, there is a place for a SD memory disc and you can store your books on it.

Plus, once you purchase a Kindle book from Amazon, you always have it. For instance, I purchased a book, read it, then deleted from memory. A few months later I decided to re-read a portion of the book. I went back onto Amazon to my Kindle section, found the book, and had Amazon re-send it to my Kindle. After I was finished reading it I again deleted it from the Kindle memory; yet if I decide I want to read it again in two years, I can again have it downloaded again.

Oprah had the Kindle on her show friday. She said if you buy a memory card like the kind you use for a camera the kindle can hold 4000 books.

You have space to store stuff online at the amazon site. I think you can store about 1000 books online at any one time. You can also purchase something that hooks up to the Kindle and downloads directly from it to store books. I don't know how much that holds.

I thought we might have the same hang-ups about not having an actual book, but you really get used to it. It's in a leather holder that opens like a book and the text on the screen looks like a book. I like that it goes right to the page you left off so you never need a bookmark. That's on the rare occasions I get it away from my husband. I knew he'd like it but I had no idea how much he'd love it. Sometimes it gets annoying how much he loves it, he talks about it so much.

You can add up to 4000 books using memory cards.

How does this work for people with vision issues? I don't read long documents online, I have to download them and print them to be able to read them. I am curious about this though. If it's different than reading online, I just might look into it.

there are 6 different font sizes. Not sure if that answers your question.

Besides battery life....I think one of the reasons for not backlighting is eye strain.

the e-ink product tries to reproduce the printed page as opposed to the computer screen.

Just wanted to update this thread to say I finally got it and I LOVE it!!! Anyone thinking of getting one, It's great and so far there is nothing I don't like about it!! If you order by 11/1 and put OPRAHWINFREY in the special code box at check out, You'll get 50.00 off!

We just ordered mine today. It's my Xmas present from DH. We just could not resist the $50 off code. I can't wait to get it and I know exactly what book I will download first.:)

I think I'm a little big crazy for thinking this - but for a $50 off code, I am tempted to buy a second Kindle!!

Ok, I'm not going to - but it's just so tempting!

Just saw this thread and I have to go out to dinner but I'll be back!!!!

In a nutshell - LOVE IT - best thing I EVER bought myself. Reading all the time now.

Bathtub readers - put your Kindle in a gallon size ziplock bag. Two if you are extra fussy. You can see through easily and read in the tub without a problem. Also at the beach, by the pool, etc.

Back later......
