Are you happy with the Dyson DC15 vacuum? I am debating between the DC14 or the DC15. I like the ball with the DC15 but have noticed at all the stores we have gone to, the rubber part that holds the hose on the outside of the machine is always torn off so therefore we can never test it because it doesn't work. Do they really break that easy?

I don't know but I have a Dyson. The complete thing with no ball.
I also wonder about that ball...Doesn't it get filthy?

I just bought the DC15 ball Dyson....just vacumed my whole house with it and I can't believe the amount of dirt that was left behind by my last vacuum...it was disgusting! I went with the ball one over the DC14 because I liked how the vacuum could pivot and the lower profile of the head. I'm hoping someone else out there can testify as to the quality of this particular model too.

I purchased the DC14 a few months ago. I wondered if there was value in purchasing the ball unit and decided against it. I didn't think the ball was worth the extra $$ and just one more thing to break down.

Buy an American vacuum. We have a Royal. We have had it for over 14 years. It cleans great! Jerry's brother was selling fancy vacuums once and he was demonstrating and supposed to show us how little our vacuum picked up. He was dumbfounded, there was nothing on his filter paper.
Our Royal is commercial quality and is heavy duty. I have attachments with it.

Wow, I didn't see your post earlier. I was just about to ask about these vacuum cleaners myself as I am very interested in getting one as well. I think I'll check to see what consumer reports has to say about them.

Consumer Reports lists the DC15 much higher than the DC14

Here are some of the features to keep in mind for the DC15:

Bag No

Manual pile adjust No

Suction control No

Brush on/off Yes

Retractable cord No

Easy on/off Yes

Full-bag/bin indicator Yes

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter No

Weight (lbs.) 20

thanks for posting this...what were the differences between the DC14 and the DC15 according to Consumer reports?

I was suprised to see this thread, I thought it was lost on the community board and no one saw it.

Denine - how much does an American vaccum cost?

Well we decided to hold off on buying the dyson this weekend because we were shopping around Home Depot and decided we might do the Pergo on the floor and may not even need that expensive of a vaccum. We are now trying to debate on the keeping the light colored carpet and buying a Dyson or buying Pergo.

Cepmom - The differences between the DC14 and the DC15 is: The DC15 on/off switch and floors switch is more convienient, the DC15 has the ball for easier movement and has a sturdier base to keep it standing up. Thats really all we were told at the stores we visited.

that's pretty much what I saw when I was comparing them at the store too. I was just curious what Consumer Reports had to say about the differences that made them rate it "much higher" than the DC14.

We have mostly hardwood floors ~ only one room with wall to wall carpet so we have always had a canister vac because I like the hard wood floor attachments. I wouldn't have considered an upright except that my SIL just bought one (DC07) and loves hers. She also has some hardwood and is a self confessed neat freak ;) so if it's good enough for her hard wood floors, I figured it had to be good enough for me!

I still have moments when I hestitate to keep this due to the cost, then I remember how much dirt it sucked out of my carpet that I had just vacuumed with my old canister vac just 2 days before and I am sold again.

From Consumer Reports:

DC14 - (ranking 17 out of 32 vacuums tested)
RECOMMENDATIONS & NOTES
A very good bagless vac, but has confusing controls. Easier to use than the comparable Dyson DC07 when using wand with attachments. Hose longer than most. Noisy. Hard to push and pull. No headlamp. HEPA filter (washable): $17.50.

GENERAL FEATURES of the DC14:

Bag No

Manual pile adjust No

Suction control No

Brush on/off Yes

Retractable cord No

Easy on/off No

Full-bag/bin indicator Yes

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter Yes

Weight (lbs.) 19

DC15 (ranking: 8 out of 32):

RECOMMENDATIONS & NOTES
A very good, bagless vac. Bagless. Brush on/off switch.Full bin alert. Overload protection for blower fan and rotating brush motors. Hose longer than most. Lacks suction control. Lacks headlamp.

Both the DC14 & DC15 are rated as excellent for cleaning bare floors (no carpet).
