Do you have your class assignment yet? Any friends of your child's in his/her class?

Are you using any after/before school care?

Bus, walk, Mom/Dad driving?

My youngest starts this year. She is in public 1/2 day. We just moved here so we don't know anyone yet. We registered last week and they told me to check on the 19th for her assignment. I stay home, so no after/before care needed. They have a bus and we will try that out. If they hate it (ds is going in 4th) I'll drive them. I had to drive them before.

Another Kindergarten Mom here!

Gracie starts on 9/2 at the public school.

Schedule is one full day, three half days and one day off. I put her in extended day two afternoons (little miss social butterfly needs it) so she will have 3 full days, one half day and one day off. The day off is friday and I have told her that will be our special day and she can pick what we do. :)

I will most likely pack her lunch most days.

I know her teacher and some of the kids in her class.

Extended day two afternoons. DS9 did it in Kindergarten and LOVED the program.

Bus...the part I dislike the most. :(

It is tough giving this one up for school as she has been such fun to have around - I will really miss her company.

Are you using any after/before school care?
no

Bus, walk, Mom/Dad driving?
driving, I wish we could just walk it.

I don't know yet. 4yo DD makes the age cutoff by 3 days, but her preschool teacher doesn't think she's ready for K. We have her registered for a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class at a private school, which is for kids who make the deadline but aren't quite ready. Then she would go to a traditional K the following year.

But tomorrow she's being evaluated by the public school; the ps teacher will tell us if *she* thinks DD's ready for K now. If so, we'll have to make a decision. If not, it's off to TK.

In any case, it will be half day TK or K, and she'll spend the other half of the day with Grandma. Grandma will give her lunch. Not sure how we'll work out transportation etc. yet. I hate having so much up in the air.

Our elementary school starts full day K in 2005, so if she does the TK this year she'll do full day K the next year.

I do.

She started last Tuesday August 3rd.
It is a Great Public School.
Full Day
I pack her lunch, except for Pizza Fridays.....

We have already been going for a week.

All new friends. She was at home before.

No after care. Grandmother will be picking her up daily.

Driving. No busing to the school.

DS starts Aug 25th at a private K.

It is all day and they provide lunch.

We get room assignment on the 24th's open house day. He knows some kids going to the same school so I think he will have some friends since there are only 2 K classes.

DH is a SAHD so he will provide Dad's taxi for going and coming. Right now he is not signed up for any after school activities but he may sign up for one - one day a week.

We are excited. He school is K-12 so they call him the class of 2018 - that really scares me! Where has the time gone?

When is his/her first day? Son starts next week on the 19th

Private or public? Public

Full or 1/2 day? its full day but alternate days so my son goes Tuesday and Thursday and evey other Friday.

Hot lunch or sack lunch (for full dayers)? he will probably alternate. We get a menu so I will let him oick from the menu and days he doesn't like I will pack a lunch

Are you using any after/before school care? No I own my own home day care

Bus, walk, Mom/Dad driving? Bus right in front of house

My oldest DS started Kindergarten last week! It is a public kindergarten which meets full day 2 days a week and one half day. He has been buying lunch and seems to really enjoy it. They have him paired with a six grader at lunch who helps him learn how to get thru the line. His best friend from daycare is in his class so that has worked out great.

He takes the bus to school in the morning then goes to afterschool care where I pick him up. He also goes to a full day daycare program run by the school on the days he does not have kindergarten.

He loves Kindergarten and I am getting used to him getting on the bus in the morning so things are working out great.

Zane's first day is August 23rd
He'll be attending public school; the district is the reason we chose this community.
Full day, but no "official" assignment yet. We're 99% sure we got the teacher we were hoping for, though!
He'll probably do hot lunch. Each school has a central kitchen and they actually make pretty good meals!. When he was in the preschool program the little stinker was eating breakfast(unbeknowst to us) at school *after* having a breakfast at home! Waffle Wednesday is a huge hit! LOL!
The YMCA runs our "wraparound care" program, which we will use. Dad will drop off in the morning and I'll likely do the pickup!

Wow - lots of kindergarten parents here! I'll know a good place to come if I need a kindergarten sounding board at some point. ;)
My youngest starts this year - I'm feeling really old!

Official class assignments are not out yet - but DS had the BEST K teacher and she told me she used one of her 'gimmes' (her term for it - not mine) to get my DD in her class! This is a good thing!
She also said her other 'gimme' this year is a little girl that DD has not met yet - but the teacher really thinks they will become fast friends. I trust her judgement and am excited for a great year!

Are you using any after/before school care?

I am her before and after schol care. :)

Bus, walk, Mom/Dad driving?

Combination of mom driving and bus.

When is his/her first day?
September 1, 2004 (as per state law)

Private or public?
Public (K-2). One of the best in Madison.

Full or 1/2 day?
Full!

Hot lunch or sack lunch (for full dayers)?
Sack lunch, she's also picky.

Do you have your class assignment yet? Any friends of your child's in his/her class?
No class assignment yet. We requested that she be placed with friends. She knows about a dozen other children who will be attending the same school.

Are you using any after/before school care?
Yes. I will be attending the local community college to freshen up my resume.

Bus, walk, Mom/Dad driving?
A bit of each, I think. We're close enough to walk and the bus stops about a block away. BUT ... school starts at 7:45 AM :earseek: and we are not used to being up that early. The bus stops at 7:15, I think so that's even earlier! I bet we'll end up driving her a lot :).

My one (and only) starts on September 7th. He is going to a private school for kindergarten because I found a really good dual immersion program and I want him to be biliterate (not just bilingual) in English and Spanish. It is 5 hours a day, with luch at the half-way point, and then he'll be picked up by the nanny who has watched him the last four years. I'm on a year-round schedule and he is on a traditional one, so for a few weeks every few months I'll get to pick him up. He did the summer program (on CEntral America) at the school so he has a few friends already. Now I'm thinking of having another one.

Wow! There sure are a lot of us with kindergarteners! I hope everyone will post how his/her first day went!

Shawn is starting on Sept 7th
Public school
we have met all 3 K teachers and any one of them will be great
they had story times every month so he already knows alot of the kids so I dont think friends will be an issue

The YMCA runs the after school program
he is in that and we will pick him up around 5 i believe
as for the lunches I believe I'll pack his lunch he is a picky eater

I am very excited

Add me to the list!

Let's see - DS starts this Friday the 13th  !

It's a full-day program (5 days a week) at the same private school where he attended preK.

He'll be getting hot lunches (required by the school for all of the early grade levels).

We met his teachers this past Friday and noticed there were several classmates from his preK who'll be in his section. Actually, most of the preK's will be returning, they've just "re-mixed" the groups.

Lucky for us, the school has both before- & after-care, but we'll probably only need the after-care for early dismissal days.

Transportation - Dad drops off, Mom picks up. We're in a newer subdivision, so bus service hasn't been extended yet.

Can't believe it's already time for "big school"!

My DS start on sept 7th.

he is going to a private class that is at the same day care learning center he has been attending.

It is full day

He will be given a hot lunch by them and snacks

there is no busing and they are the before and after care as well

He has a number of friends from pre-k moving up with him.

It is really not a big transition for him. Next year he will go to public school for 1st grade so that will be the big difference.

DD had her evaluation this morning, and the K teacher agreed with her preschool teacher that she should wait another year before starting K. This is what we thought, too, but it's good to have it confirmed all the way around.

The evaluation consisted of letter recognition (upper and lower case), and letter sounds. DD knew about 2/3 of her letters and a few of the sounds. Then the teacher asked her to put number cards from 1-20 in order. She did fine with 1-10, but needed lots of help from then on.

The teacher said DD would do OK in K, but since we have another option (the private school Transitional K class for kids who aren't quite ready for K) it would benefit her to wait.

DD tends to "glaze over" when we try to do academic stuff, and the public schools in our area are very academic for K. so I'm sure this is the right decision.
