who follows the hostess to your seat first

This may sound really strange but my husband and I have a running etiquette question. When you are in a restaurant and the hostess is walking to your table, who follows the hostess first. My husband insists it is the man, I think it is the woman. I follow her but DH comments on it every time.

I follow the hostess, Dh follows behind me.

here's the question that dh an i always have:

when you reach the table/booth, does the first person go to the furthest or the closest seat?

I always follow her and he's behind me. I've always heard it as "ladies first".

As for sitting...I always sit facing towards the other tables b/c I'm a people watcher. Husband just learned to live with it

Yup, ladies first and ladies choice of where to sit... and the man doesn't sit until the lady is seated.

I've never really thought about it, its usually who ever is closer to the hostess when she shows up.

My bf likes to sit facing the door, that's the only quirk we have when eating out.

Thanks, somehow my husband says he heard it was man first, wouldn't care except he acts like I have no etiquette and I hate being wrong. I figure George is right.

Usually DH goes first...Im more of a follower.

As for where to sit, it depends. I always have to pick my seat. I like to see the door or the room or something besides a wall, so depending on the setup, I pick my seat when we get to the table. Thats one of my things.

the hostess starts to walk and says please follow me.......and my very cute hubby puts his arm gently behind my back and sort of pushes me towards the hostess....yup I guess that is how it goes........seriously...this is the way we always do it......

Which ever of us isn't carrying DS (usually me) goes first Although he is just at the age now where going to dinner is a pain in the butt.

When you enter the restaurant, solicit the attention of the host or hostess in a civil manner. State your reservation time and name, and wait to be seated. Offer to remove the coat of your companion and utilize the coat check, if there is one. Do not forget the tip. When it is time to sit down, allow your date to follow the host or hostess first and offer to pull out her chair, pushing it back in once she is seated. Now sit down, place your napkin on your lap and relax.

OT...but I hate when the hostess walks so fast that you practically lose her.

To me, this is especially annoying when my father (86) is with me.
