Last fall at the L.A. county fair, they had the most artery clogging thing i could think of - krispy kreme chicken sandwiches! Fried chicken with a krispy kreme as the bread...
Actually, I don't know if this is a southern or FL thing. I'm a native to FL (north FL, considered the "Deep South"), and I'd never heard of frying all those things until I saw a special on the Food Network on frying everything from Twinkies and Snickers to cheesesteaks. This was over two years ago, and the place that was doing all this frying was a small deli in NYC.
No matter whose bright idea this was, it sounds like a night of severe stomach upset to me!

It's not a southern thing or a northern thing, it's a fair thing -- that's pretty much one of the common threads through all state/county fairs around the country. Along with death-inducing carnival rides, fried foods is the next most common thing about fairs, no matter what part of the country you are.
Hmm we have fried pickles down here and they are pretty good! I've seen the oreos/twinkies but just couldn't manage to try them! However, don't get between me and any funnel cake! I love those things!!
Only once or twice a year (at fairs ), but with the exception of the deep fried pepsi (which I understood to be like a funnel cake, just made with soda rather than water), I've tried all of those at least once.
My theory -- take something good, dunk it in batter and deep fry it and it's just that much better!!
