We are driving and I know there are some places that are better than others to get a good price on gas. But I can't seem to remember where the cheaper place might be.

Does anyone happen to know a good stop mid way?

Sorry, should have mentioned that. I-5 south. Do you happen to know how far into the trip your suggestion is?

Thanks!

I live in Sacramento, but i go on i-5 then head over to highway 99 from stockton, there are alot of different costco gas stations on highway 99 before you hit bakersfield where i always fill up. Theres stations at merced or fresno on highway 99 that is a good stop to fill up. There are no costco gas stations close to i-5.

I would stop around Bakersfield to stop before you hit the grapevine. Around 275 miles to Bakersfield from Sacramento.

You know we do! :) We are a bit farther away but we like to stop in Lost Hills. We usually hit the Love's there for gas, occasionally for snacks (I usually have snacks on hand tho) and a bathroom break. The Denny's there is good too, the service is really fast and it's nice to not eat in the car every time. :) Lost Hills is a tad over halfway but it's a good place to stop and the gas is not overpriced.

May I ask why you switch over to 99?

We always seem to stop at Harris Ranch. There are 3 or 4 gas stations and food (denny's, red robbin, fast food, and harris ranch restaurant) It always seems to work out just when we need gas.

There are family members that live right next to highway 99 in merced. It is a good resting area to relax for awhile before i go down to anaheim. It is not as bad when i am going down on highway 99 than i-5. But that is just me and it is my way of going down to DL. The main cities going down to anaheim, (like merced, bakersfield, etc) is on the way and it is a good idea to stop at one of those area.

If you're looking for something that is a couple hours South of Sac, there is a town just off I-5 called Santa Nella. Take off the interstate and go LEFT. There are several gas stations, motels, and restaurants (incl. Starbucks). I think most of I-5 is pretty bare and desolate so I don't know of any other places to stop other than Harris Ranch.

I live about 2 hours south of you as well (off 99 around the Merced area). I don't think you'd need to fill up so quickly but just so you know, there is a Costco right on the highway in Modesto, Turlock and Merced.

Fresno would be about 3 hours south of Sac and it's a big town, so there are lots of places to stop there. After Fresno, probably the next decent sized town would be Hanford and then Tulare (home of the famous Tulare Farm Show!). Tulare would probably be about 4 hours into your trip. After that, it's mostly dusty little farm towns until you get into Bakersfield.

When we drive down, we usually stop around the Magic Mountain area in Santa Clarita. It's about 4 hours-ish from me, so add another 2 hours for you. It gets us over a good portion of the Grapevine and we always time it to stop for dinner at Marie Calendars and miss the LA rush hour traffic.

Hope this info helps you. Not sure if I answered your question directly but maybe you can find some tidbit of info that will be helpful! princess:

Are you sure that even with the best gas prices on the drive south, you wouldn't save more by flying with the Southwest $25 one way tickets they have available through tomorrow?

We drive down from Sonoma County. It turns out to be about the same distance as from the Sac. area but a longer drive. My inlaws live in Lincoln so we've checked out times and distance.

Anyway, we always get gas around Button Willow. When we see the Taste of India sign we know to get off and get gas. It isn't the cheapest, but if we got gas sooner we wouldn't have as much on the other end, so we wait until there.

Unfortunately the day we are going down it is $150 per person, way too expensive! So we are renting a car for the drive down then flying home for $25 per person.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I was coming back to mention Santa Nella. I like to stop there for a bathroom break too. And they have Anderson's Pea Soup, I'm not a fan of the soup but it is a nice place to stop and rest/eat. They have a neat little gift shop with food snacks too.

Remember that she's got more then 1 person, so if you multiply the $25 tickets (which are amazing and I'm bummed we can't use that promo!) by 4 people that's $100, then again for the return trip it's another $100, so that's $200. We drive 4 people in the minivan for much less than that, it costs us right at $100 for the whole trip......

Brilliant! :thumbsup2

We also have four people in a minivan! :goodvibes Our parents live in So Cal so we frequently drive when we need our car with us. Then when we're sticking in one place (like a Disney visit), generally fly rather than put ourselves, our kids, and our car through the drive. We generally start the trip with a full tank (approx. $50 -- if gas is under $3.00/gallon) and fill up once again on the way down. Granted the second tank doesn't get completely used up, but we still have to fill up a third time on our way back up. I also figure the 800 round trip miles definitely take it's toll on the car. Plus, when we drive that trip I usually take it in for an oil change and tire rotation and all that before we go. So, with the gas, miles put on the car, and pre-trip maintance, I find any round trip tickets costing less than $60 to be about the equivelent of driving.

I wish I had thought of it myself. Someone suggested that to me and I thought it was brilliant too:rotfl:

When we go I will be on the verge of needing new tires and with the grapevine I would feel like I had to replace them before we went even if they were not quite ready. That would be about $500, $30 for an oil change...

This way we are more comfortable on the way down, not abusing our car and we get to come home quick because the drive home always sucks!

Thanks for everyones help, I appreciate it!

By the way, our total for 4 people with Southwest's $25 deal was $143. Includes taxes and all that extra junk.

Oh see, we have free oil changes with our van so those don't bother us, we also have free tire rotations with Big O so we don't count that in our trip expense tally. Yup, it's $50 to fill up when we leave, we get gas in Lost Hills, that gets us to Anaheim and we can make back to Lost Hills on our return trip, then I've got a good half tank when I get home for the rest of my week. So we figure $100 for gas and that's it. :) And we would want our own car when we are there so we would then rent something if we fly, so that's another reason we drive.
I'm not that much farther out from you guys, we take 12 to 5 and drive on down. :) It's just over 400 for miles for us.

Lost hills exit.. if you hit a gas station before or right after the price hikes up a lil bit..
