Who do you report this to?

This morning on my way in to work, two idiots were speeding down the freeway weaving in and out of cars as they raced. In the 30 seconds I saw them, they almost had 3 wrecks.

Is that a 911 call, or local police call to report it? This isn't the first time I've witnessed racing on the freeway, and I want to program the right number into my cell.

jmho, but i would say definately not to call 911.

if you want to call someone, call the local police, but it seems like it would all be done with by the time they got there anyways.

we also have a local police highway cell number. i think it is *77.

I would. I think ours is *FHP...Florida Highway Patrol. At least they can try and catch them farther up ahead.

It's not 911 unless they cause an accident or they start on fire.

I would call the police to advise them and maybe they will put someone out there to watch for it. Calling on the road isn't going to help, they will be long gone.

I have asked DH this in the past. He said not 911 so now I have the local police department's communication center number programmed into my phone. I have never used it even though I have been tempted to. :o

A few weeks ago I was in Ohio and didn't have a local police number so I did call 911 on a driver. I gave them his license plate number, make a vehicle and the exit number we were at. The took my cell number for reference.

calling on the road may help, one of my hobbies is going to car shows with the MICKEYMOBILE, and I have talked to people who travel around the country attending shows, they connect thru car websites and often will caravan across country to a show, they often will drive at high speed most of the way..my car is stricly for show but a lot of the younger guys are all about speed, and will just race each other all the way or challenge other performance type cars the whole trip....

the stae police or highway patrol could send someone out farther down the road if you can give the mile marker where you saw them ..the direction they are traveling and a guess at the speed...

I called out local PD on a car who seriously almost caused several accidents. I almost rear ended them twice (they kept weaving and slamming on their brakes for no apparent reason), they almost drove off the road, almost drove into other drivers... it was rush hour in the morning. Dark outside, Weather was awful, it was terrible. The police told me they had better things to do. Even tho I gave them the license plate #, car description, driver description. And they kept asking my name.

Driving an hour in rush hour traffic every day in Dallas area I have to ask which freeway can you speed on? :D

I would have asked for a name and asked if he was willing to repeat his comment to the next of kin if the guy caused a fatal accident..

I also told the dispatcher their tags on the car were expired. Like maybe that would make a difference since their driving did not seem to concern her.
Honestly, the dispatcher sounded bored by my call. Apparently I was wasting her time. The interesting thing is I fully expected it to be teenagers, it was what looked like a adult female and 2 adult males in the car.

that is why i personally wouldn't even bother calling it in unless an accident had been caused, lachesis. around here, the police won't even come to file an accident report unless the amount of damage is over a certain amount of money.

watching the local news at night, i can't say i blame them though. they have lots of other things to worry about, unfortunately. :(

Around here, 911 from a cell phone goes directly to the state patrol, so that would be the correct number to call in Minnesota. I am sure all states vary somewhat. I have done it before when I have see dangerous activity, or road rage etc. I usually try to get licence numbers as well as a discription of the car.

Thats just it, they came extremely close to causing a accident. :( I kept watching the paper sure I was going to see something.

Here they are extremely over zelious when pulling someone over, 2-4 cop cars. You'd think it was a drug bust.... Even for a small fender bender, you see 4-6 cop cars.
Many times they are pulled into the local McDonalds or donut shop... We have a fairly low crime rate here.

Our newest problem (if you can call it that) is people doing a minimum of 60 in a 55. Average speed limit is 65 in the 55 and some people do 70+ The cops are included in the "over 55".

in NY we use *DWI, it serves a similar purpose for reckless drivers, unsafe drivers etc. I think ultimately though it winds up with 911 dispatcher anyway.

Here it was south Houston, at the end of rush hour (8:45) and before you get to the tight /packed areas.

While I do not condone the call taker or dispatcher basically not giving you the time of day,you might want to look at it from their point of view. Road rage, bad driving, speeding and total disregard of others around you is running rampant throughout the country.
Now I am not a dispatcher or call taker but I can give you some insight through my profession.
On a freeway or highway by the time you report this behavior the cars are no longer in the exact same place. Remember this behavior is repeated thousands of times a day in all areas of the freeway. I understand that you are mad, concerned or just wanting to get even by reporting it. Unfortunatly in a large metropolitan area or freeway there are only so many Police officers and thus can not be everywhere at once. Remember the only witness to this behavior is you. This is why dispatchers ask for your name and address. Should something happen down the road say they get into an accident with somebody else your testimony would be very important in a trial if it came to that. BUT a cell phone call taken by a dispatcher out of the blue accusing a motorist of bad driving is not going to help by remaining anonymous. Yes it does help make law enforcement aware of a problem driver ie. drunk etc. but without you identifying yourself it doesnt help.
Now a quick comment on driving infractions. The infraction has to be witnessed by your local law enforcement officer or State Officer. I do believe some states allow you to file a complaint with that states registry by taking the plate#,time, date and location of the incident. I do not know what the procedures are after that though.
Now you can look at it this way. EVERYBODY (including you and me) have gone over the speed limit, failed to use signals, cut somebody off (with or without meaning to) ETC. Now everytime we go into the left lane and start passing cars would you want every car on the highway calling the police. Probably not. 911 is meant for emergencies (life or death) unless the cars are a major danger to all on the highway call the police and report it, but remember to leave your name and address.
Another quick comment on 911 cell phone calls. Do not assume that your 911 call is going to the department in the area your in. It can go ANYWHERE to any police department in your state or next state over. The dispatcher is not trying to be wise when they ask where are you calling from and what cityor state, they do not know. And also remember that by the time you report this behavior the cars involved are ususally long gone. It is unfortunate but this happens all the time.
This is why sometimes when it is quiet the police are just sitting on the side of the road. They may appear they are not doing anything but guess what, just our presence (oops) their presence alone has a major impact on traffic behavior. If there are a lot of reports of poor behavior you will see more police presence in that area and hopefully witnessed by the Police Officer and get a much deserved ticket.
I hope I clarified some of this for you and again I do not condone any kind of rude behavior by Dispatchers or the call takers but sometimes they are getting numerous calls such as these 24 hours a day seven days a week. Deep down they may feel by the time they give your call out they know the cars are long gone but they still should take the call and log it thus creating a statistic for that area. And as far as the comment from the Dunkin doughnut or MCdonalds crack I for one do not eat at either. But I like coffee and guess where they sell coffee.AS far as the fender bender crack, ALL accidents can be serious. All accidents can cause injuries, anxiety and yes heart attacks because it is a tramatic experience to that person depending on the age and health condition of that person.I have been to "fender benders" and found the driver had a seizure and even was not breathing or it was caused by a crime occurring in the car (Domestic etc.) so unless you know about all "fender benders" and the condition of everybody involved you do not have the right to say a large response is not justified. You do not know the facts in the situation. And guess who the first is at the scene of a life and death situation, THAT Dunkin Doughnut MC Donald going cop. Enough said on this and I dont want to turn this into a debate just showing my opinion.

In other words, don't bother calling it in, it's pointless?

Obviously it's too late to call this one in, but for future reference.

Also, can you make a call to that district's police and just mention that you have seen several races with people going between 20 and 50 over the speed of the traffic (even if the traffic's doing 80!!!) and they've been weaving in and out of cars, having numerous near misses, etc. All that were seen were in the X to X timeframe, and would it be possible to increase surveillance of the freeway in that general area? (That make any sense?)

I typically see reckless racing like this about once or twice a month on my way in to work.

And this time, I think they may *have* caused an accident farther behind us because one of the cars' rear bumpers was sticking out and about to fall off!

Rajah, it is not pointless. Call the local police or state police on their business number and report it. Most departments keep statistics as long as you tell them where the problem drivers are and where the calls are comming from. And after enough complaints usually officers will be stationed or hidden in these areas in hopes of catching the culprits in the act. Trust me it is only a matter of time before they are caught. But when we say caught it is usually just a ticket and depending on economic backround of the individual getting the ticket (ie rich) it may have no effect on them at all:( But then you will get the ones who will deny doing anything wrong till they are blue in the face. I seriously think some people leave their common sense and become a Jekyll and Hyde when they get behind the Wheel of a automobile turning into one of most bad behaved drivers on the road but other wise a nice person outside of a car. It is just weird and I could tell you hundreds of stories like this. I sometimes think when they do get caught they actually believe they did nothing wrong and dont remember doing it.
