Who do you consider our best president?

I might go with George Washington. He had the opportunity to become a Dictator but didn't. He set the stage for Presidents as we know it. He also was pretty progressive for his era he freed his slaves upon his death.

I'll put my vote in for George Washington as well. And an honorable mention to Lincoln. I think both put aside a lot of their personal beliefs and did what they thought best for the country.

Depends....

Accomplishments- FDR

Integrity- Lincoln

Vision- JFK

Perseverence- Reagan

Accountability- Truman

Intellegence (but not always common sense)- Clinton

Taking Chances- Nixon

Overall- Washington (he could have set an entirely different tone if he had given in to corruption and temptation)

Another vote for Ronald Reagan. The challenges he had to face internationally, and without flinching, propelled him to the top spot, in my opinion.

I'd say Reagan, but George Washington is a close second.

Ronald Reagan...the end of Communism.

He's got my vote too. All without a single shot being fired too!

Reagan? Of all time? Wow!!!

I'm with the OP...Lincoln in 19th Century, with Jefferson a close second, and FDR in the 20th Century.

1) Lincoln
2) Washington
3) tie - FDR - Reagan
4) tie - Adams (the first) - Jefferson (Though I'll never forgive Jefferson and Hamilton for handing us the accursed "political party" system).

I thought this appropriate in this thread:

http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/greatestamerican/greatestamerican.html

The discovery channel ran a poll a little while back and had Americans vote for who they considered to be the all time greatest American. The top 10 are:

1 Ronald Reagan
2 Abraham Lincoln
3 Martin Luther King
4 George Washington
5 Benjamin Franklin
6 George W Bush
7 Bill Clinton
8 Elvis Presley
9 Oprah Winfrey
10 Franklin D Roosevelt

Walt Disney was #13

I also saw a poll once about the greatest president. I think that one was from the History Channel. I went in search of those results a few years ago, but couldn't find them. Reagan was #1 in that as well though.

Rutherford B. Hayes

Before being elected, he stated that he would, under no circumstances, seek a second term as President. This meant that there was none of the political nonsense that first term Presidents usually deal with (because they have to worry about being re-elected).

FYI - His wife Lucy was the first President's wife to be referred to as "The First Lady".

But then who do the lobbyists give all of their money to to buy political favors? :confused3 That President Hayes was downright unAmerican!!;)

I was going to post this too. I saw the last show and thought it very interesting.

Not sure I would put Clinton, Elvis, Bush or Oprah in the great American of all time. Not even in my top 100.

If I had to vote for just one not sure I could do it. Probably Reagan, but I think Jefferson was a visionary and progessive for his time. I love Teddy Roosevelt. I have since I was a child. He had forethought on the environment that no other president has. Lincoln, well, because he was Lincoln.

My picks, in order:

1. Lincoln. Saved the Republic as we know it.
2. FDR. Saved the world as we know it.
3. JFK. Traded nuclear war (Cuban missile crisis) for Cold War. Didn't back down
3. Reagan. Tied for having same results as JFK.

Reagan? I remember the Reagan years. There is no way he would even be in my top 10.

My vote is for Lincoln followed by FDR.
