We're looking to change banks, and I'm looking for recommendations.

Right now, we're with Wells Fargo. Well, they ticked off DH a long time ago, and just made me angry enough I'm ready to change as well.

So...

Who do you bank with, and are you happy with them?

I'm interested in looking at Washington Mutual and Chase.

Wachovia! This is a bank that knows and practices customer service. They are amazingly accommodating, fast to fix any problem, and very helpful. Alas, they don't have an office in Chicago, so I have to do banking via direct deposit and ATMs (or mail/phone). But they are great!

I work at a bank so I bank with my employer.

I wouldn't go with WaMu if you could. I've heard way too many stories about their customer service.

Credit Unions are a nice way to go if you're looking for an alternative bank.

Just don't go with Bank of America. They have crummy customer service and are just plain bad.

beware with credit unions too. some of them have the same kinds of problems that banks do. we belong to a credit union and we have been unhappy with them for awhile now. we are waiting to pay off our loans with them and then we're switching to a larger bank.

I have Sovereign Bank and they are okay, no better or worse than any other chain. I have had a few mishaps, but mostly due to incompetent bank employees in one of their branches. I have found a better branch and I usually go through a manager there if I need help with anything.

My BF has an online only bank. I think they are called Brookline Bank. They are much smaller and he loves them, however it is a hassle if he ever needs to go to an actual bank.

I'm with Fleet, who I've always been happy with. Unfortunately they merged with Bank of America and I am veru dissatisfied with BoA's business practices and disloyalty

I have been with our credit union for 20 years and would never consider going to a big bank- I don't want to pay the bank a fee for them to use my money. I would rather get the interest.

Michigan State University Federal Credit Union. We have been with them for 20 years and have been very pleased.

I'm at Washington Mutual...if the one branch I goes to closed down I would switch banks, period. The people in this branch are WONDERFUL - every single other branch I've been in has been an issue, several times I've left shaking mad.

I was at Comerica for a while, they were just "there". Nothing great, nothing horrible.

I manage a credit union so, needless to say, that is my primary institution. I also have accounts with BankOne/ Chase and are very happy with their service as well. I think it all depends on what kind of service you are looking for.

2 locally owned institutions!

1 is a bank, 1 is a credit union....being locally owned and not a "big bell" type bank, EVERYTHING is personal...it's great, they know everyone by name- at every branch we go to!

Wonderful and I wudnt change if I had to! I'd go without

We use Dearborn Federal Credit Union here in MI & also TCF bank.

Currently we bank with Bank of America, and we are happy. No problems, and it's nice to belong to a large bank.
Before that, we were with Community Bank of Florida, small bank, large problems.
In IL, we were with a credit union, was OK for a long time, but started changing their policies right before we moved...don't miss them at all.

I'm with Bank of America and the only complaint I had was the foreign exchange rate and the "delivery fee" connected with that. However, because I am such a good customer, they DID refund the delivery fee when I complained about it. Also, I checked into the exchange rates after getting to Europe and it seems that they were just as bad there as the one Bank of America had given me before I left. Bank of America has online banking and free cashiers checks for Advantage customers. I don't know how you can be an Advantage customer unless you are at least 55, though.

USAA rocks, if you don't mind doing internet banking and mailing any checks you need to deposit in. They have no fees, free checks, rebate up to $15/month for ATM fees, a rebate for using your check card as a credit card instead of a debit card, interest on the checking account (low of course but every little bit helps) and one of the best customer service ratings out there. We could not be more pleased. For all of USAA's other services you need to be a member (which we are, DH was in the USAF) but because of FDIC regulations they can't deny non-members accounts at their bank so you can call them up and they will give you a "member" number that is just good for opening the account. They also have been doing online banking for longer than just about anyone else.

Digital Federal Credit Union. Joined them May 1984 and never regretted it. They are geared to customer service, with .25% increase in savings rates with direct deposit and .25% decrease in loan rate with the same.

I've been with First Internet Bank of Indiana for 5 years, and have never had a single problem with them. Yes, it's slightly inconvinient to have to mail all check deposits in, but no more inconvinient (to me anyways) than having to go to a bank branch. And they give you free prepaid return envelopes, so it doesn't even cost you the 37 cents in postage.

I would HIGHLY recommend this bank.

(Before FirstIB, I had 3 banks in 4 years (Michigan National, Great Lakes/TCF, and Chase), and I left all of them because of various problems.

Smaller, locally owned banks are much better

I disagree. I work for and bank with HSBC. We're the second largest bank in the world and known for great customer service. Right now we only have branches in a few select East Coast locales, but the expansion is happening and I hope others will give it a try.
