I'm just wondering if using the monorail is a perk for on-site guests or if anyone can use it?

Do they do security checks prior to getting on the monorail?

The monorail runs between Downtown Disney and Tomorrowland right?

Does this end up saving much time or is it mostly walking/fatigue that is saved?

Anyone with theme park admission can use/ride the monorail. Yes there is a stop at DTD and Tomorrowland inside the Disneyland Park. As for saving much time, I guess it would depend. If you are going from say the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Peir hotel and plan to make Tomorrowland your first stop then you can save some walking by using it. But if you are not at one of those hotel then there is no time / walking saved by using the monorail to get to the park.

Just remember by using the monorail you have to use park admission, you can not just hop on the monorail for a ride.

That kind of sucks in a way. It was nice at WDW to be able to ride the monorail the first night to see the sights and not have to use park admission. We had dinner at the GF and than hopped on the MR to see the Contemporary and go by the castle. Kind of hoping we could do something similar at DL.

Yeah it was nice to be able to do that at WDW. But at Disneyland the monorail was originally designed as a ride. I can remember (or at least I thought I did) way back when (guessing late 70's) that you could pay a nominal fee to be able to ride the monorail round trip. But that is no more.
