who can tell me about Bama?

You say your daughter is thinking of a major in the medical field or human resources... Probably could get a decent major in HR at UA, but for the medical field are you thinking that UA is UAB? I work in the medical field in Bham, AL, and UA is not know for graduating persons interested in the medical field. UAB in Bham has medical school, PT, OT, nursing, really anything medical.

Now I am an Auburn grad (notice how all Auburn folks are responding here... makes you wonder where the UA folks are), and I'm thinking if your daughter is a swimmer, Auburn has a great new swimming facility. Also not quite as Greek as UA, but has great campus ministries and very active Catholic student ministry. Auburn offers some medical degrees..most notably a great pharmacy program.

Just my thoughts, and WAR Eagle to all you Auburn folks responding!

I agree that UAB is THE place for medical studies, but it doesn't mean Alabama's program's wouldn't be acceptable. I think they have a good pre-med prgram, and their nursing school is good too. Of course, Auburn's school of nursing is excellent. (cough*WAREAGLE*cough). :thumbsup2
In addition to nursing, Auburn has a great pharmacy program. Just sayin'.

I went to grad school at UAB, and while it's a great school, I don't think it's the total experience the OP's DD is looking for. I think they're doing a lot lately to make it feel more like a college and less like a commuter school, but it's still an urban campus.

OP, I think you are absolutely correct that your DD does not need the Greek system to make friends and she will have many many social outlets available to her in the Catholic student groups and within her major. :goodvibes

I can't wait to hear what she finally chooses!

I have to agree with these 2, Auburn has a great reputation, besides becoming such an up an coming city, with a small town feel. There are some fabulous areas right around campus.

We get their nursing students doing their internships at the hospital where I work. And most of the Pharmacists in town are Auburn Grads, they have a wonderful program.

If I had had the opportunity to go to a real college, Auburn would have been my choice and not just because we live so close to the campus.

WAR EAGLE :cheer2:

Just wanted to let all the recent posters know that I appreciate your replies. :flower3: I am taking it all in and doing lots of thinking about what will be a great fit for her. After this ACT is done on the 11th, we will be in heavy discussion regarding where she will be applying. I'm hoping to give her plenty of acceptable choices from which to choose. It's a tough thing though because so much of her future will be influenced by where she spends the next 4 years.

Your daughter will be able to find friends and activities at UA that have nothing to do with sororities. An issue that hasn't been brought up may be the culture shock of being in the buckle of the Bible belt. It's VERY conservative here with a huge Christian republican majority. If your daughter is not republican or conservative, it could somewhat cut down on her ability to connect with other students. Don't get me wrong there are democrats and independants, but they are in the minority. I say this as a white democratic woman living the majoity of my life in Alabama. In fact, of all our friends, I am the only democrat/non-conservative in our circle. Also, people don't like to talk about it, but there is still a definite devide between the races here. I'm not saying you will see overt or explicit racism, but the undertones are still there. I'm sure I will take heat for the statment, but it is what it is. Just ask some of the well-versed sorority Disers on this thread what the racial make up of the UA sororites are.

I didn't share those things to deter you, just to make you aware that there could be the possibility of culture shock. Ya'll may be conservatives and fit right in. I also want to say that overall I love living in the South - we are raising our family here and are happy. The majority of the people are kind, helpful and friendly. It's more laid back than other parts of the country. The beach and the mountains are close by and the fall, spring and winter weather are great.

I wish your daughter the best and hope she finds just the right "fit."
