Who all is going to need new carry ons?😠

I've never had an issue (just flew in December), but what's the worst that could happen at the gate? They check it there?

TSA in FLL had pax put all bags, including BIN bags, in a tray. My carryon bag, international legal, easily fit. I don't know what would happen if your bag didn't fit.
Standard as more and more airports get the new slower machines that allow 3d scanning. I ran into the same thing at DTW last week. The trays are much larger than anything allowed into the cabin.
First time I wasn't allowed to just keep the bag on the belt. What happens if the bag is to bi
If it's too big for the tray, it's too big for the machine. It would be officer discretion if they would hand search it or just deny it. The bag would have to be considerably larger than what is allowed. I've seen 24" checked size bags fit in those trays.

We have a bag that is large but still classified as a carry-on. We need to be careful how its packed because my daughter just stuffed it and it became very wide so boarding staff made her check it.

We bought new carry-ons a few years ago that are specifically made to go under the seat but they don't fit all airlines so if we are flying an airplane that we know won't accommodate the under the seat we'll pack the larger carry-on.

We are flying Spirit for the first time Friday. I have 3 different suitcases that were all labeled and sold as a 20” carry on, but when I get the tape measure out they all measure around 23” tall when including the handle and the wheels. I even just bought a new one on Amazon and it measured the same as well. Spirit says it has to be 22” at the most. I am assuming everyone’s carryons measure like mine do at 23” and I am wondering if I am going to have an issue or if anyone has any experience with this? I tried to find a post with the exact dimensions of the carryon bin at the airport, but no luck.

It's going to be up to the station and the individual gate agent. Some are sticklers about it, some are sticklers only about those after Zone 1, and some don't really care. But by the letter of the regulations, anything more than 22" in any direction does not qualify as a carryon and could be forcibly checked for an outrageous cost.

Thanks. I think we have Zone 1 boarding. We are sitting in the big front seat section on row 2. Our ticket included either a carryon or a checked bag for no extra charge, but I don’t want to check my bags. We have always flown solely on SWA so heading to MCO on Spirit has me kinda stressed since I know nothing about them. We are flying back home on SWA though. 😊 I just ordered 2 more carryons so hopefully one of them will be the right dimensions.

What you need to look for in order to stay on the safe side are those that are branded as "international carry ons." The european airlines are notoriously sticklers for the sizing and these meet those requirements which are just slightly smaller than the US.

It kind of depends what zone you're boarding in as well. Recent Air Canada experience: Zone 1, did not monitor bag size. Zone 2/3 - everyone that looked halfway close to the limit had to use the sizer and mandatory gate check. This was on a full flight. The bag I have traveled carryon with for many years did not fit and we gate checked. With two connections to make, we panicked the whole way about that bag making it, but shockingly it did (with only a 10 minute connection in SFO no less). For us, the reason to keep our gear with us is because we were traveling for a dance conference and couldn't afford outfits getting lost en route.

I would say that Canadian carriers at least are getting a LOT more sticky about carryon size. I'll definitely be bringing my measuring tape in store for my next travel bag!

The big print sometimes lists packable dimensions. You need to read the fine print, exterior dimensions including wheels and handles.

Frequently stores like TJMax feature luggage which is too large.

International standards will work

What happens if the bag is to bi
Flying today and my home airport puts everything in bins. I asked the agent what happens if something is too big.

He said they'll put it through the machine itself or have the passenger unpack it so it does fit. He said it does happen, didn't say how much.

Trying to understand this TSA quirk;
I travelled with DD to a lacrosse tournament in Utah. I don't know if you've ever seen a lacrosse stick, but they are light. You could leave a decent bruise, but that's it. TSA is very clear; lacrosse sticks must be checked, and cannot be carried onto the plane.

Meanwhile, same flight, anyone with a light saber they just bought at SWGE was allowed to bring those on board. Huh? Just because it's expensive doesn't mean you can't hit someone with it, and those are definitely heavier, and could do more damage than a lacrosse stick.
@Lumpy1106 (or anyone with a similar experience) -- how did it go with the lax stick in checked baggage? Did you put it in a sports bag of some kind? Was it intact when you retrieved it from baggage claim? My DD and I are traveling to Europe this summer for her to play field hockey and that stick has to be checked, too. I THINK. FH is uncommon enough that the airline site doesn't specify. I'm worried about it being lost or broken as a checked item. Anyone out there have advice!!??

I would look for something rigid and hard sided that fits the stick and maybe fill in the rest of the space with other items of her kit. I'd be shocked if there isn't a hard side travel case designed for field hockey sticks, you may need to look at euro sites as the game is so much more popular there.
https://www.amazon.com/GOBUROUS-Sho...cphy=9019411&hvtargid=pla-2354553923949&psc=1 found this on Amazon. I know a lot of people that use similar bags for softball and bringing their bats and gear all over the country.

DD, women's LAX stick - take the head off, CARRY the head in your carry-on, the stick fits diagonally in a large suitcase. DS has flown with his college team (UCSB - go Gauchos!) and the long poles are a different matter. I THINK they put them all in a ski bag, then check the ski bag as "skis". Skis, snowboards and golf bags all can be checked as regular baggage without a massive extra charge (like you will get for a bike or surfboard). If I were you I'd go the golf bag route and just have multiple sticks in the same golf bag - that is if you can't get it to fit in a suitcase.

Another thing we learned the hard way - lacrosse balls and I will assume field hockey balls are heavier than you think. If you are carrying a dozen balls, you will probably be over the weight limit.

Thanks! I've done some searching and haven't found any hard-sided ones, but that's OK because they would probably be cost-prohibitive. We'll most likely end up going with something in the softsided backpack style like the one in the link you provided. I know individuals fly from all over the country for tournament and showcases, so maybe my concerns are overblown.

Would a hard shell rifle case work?
Maybe? I think might be heavy/expensive. But that's probably a great suggestion as far as my concerns about protecting it.

Thanks for your reply! Ahhh, yes, I forgot you can detach the head of the lax stick. Definitely can't get the FH stick into her suitcase, even diagonally (we tried because I really thought we could!). We aren't a family of golfers, otherwise using a golf bag might've worked, but that's OK. If we get a bag similar to what @EACarlson linked above, it should be big enough to not get lost or too abused under the plane (hopefully!!). We'll probably bubblewrap it inside, just to be safe. I don't think she's planning to bring any balls, actually (the tournament organizers should provide those), but thanks for the reminder that they are heavier that you'd think!

We've had no problems with damage to the sticks (they are kindof built to take a lot more abuse than that), but you really don't want to arrive without the head - those get pretty personalized through use. The stick though - expensive, but you could always pick one up at the merch tent if you needed to.
