Hello all,

I have a cat 12 gty and I have read a lot about people getting white noise machines. Is this suggested? If so what kind should I get? What kind was successful for you and your family? I really think I'm gonna get one because my son, my wife and I all sleep with ceiling fans all the time and when we go to hotels without them it takes a while to get to sleep. We are so used to hearing the wind sound from the fan that when we don't have it it's wierd.

Any help would be great.

I bought mine at Brookstone. It is also an alarm clock. The "noise" will stay on all night unlike a previous one I bought. Here is the description and link:
"Take relaxation with you when you travel. This travel clock uses digitally recorded nature sounds to lull you to sleep at home or while on the road. Thunderstorm, babbling stream, a peaceful country road, tropical rain forest and more—19 digital recordings in all provide rich, true-to-life sound. A special 20th sound space lets you record your own sound or a personal voice message. Built-in digital alarm clock with an easy-to-read display tracks time in two zones and wakes you to any one of the 20 sounds or the electronic alarm. Two-inch speaker delivers crisp, clear sound that will enhance the relaxation experience. Meet your personal relaxation needs—play sounds continuously or have them shut off automatically in 30, 60 or 90 minutes."

I Had Room 2015 Last Week 8/25 - 8/28 (cat 12) And It Was Very Quiet. The Loudest Noise Was Teh Clock On The Nightstand -- You Heard Every Click.

I recommend bringing a white noise machine anyway, even if you are not in a noisy stateroom. Of course, I have a hubby who snores! It will also block out incidental sound, such as people in the hallways...you can never predict whether you will have noisy neighbors, even if you are in a room not known for being noisy. I got my portable model at Sharper Image.

Thanks a lot for such a descriptive post. Your machine looks great but the $75.00 price tag is a little much. I think I'll look around for a better price.

Thanks again to everyone who answered.

We have a Homedics one from Target. (cheap) It has several sound settings like summer night (sounds like crickets), or heartbeat (which to me is a little spooky...lol...too many scary movies!!! :earseek: ) or there's ocean waves, or mountain stream (just sounds like water over rocks), spring rain, and then just plain white noise. It was only like $12.00...

But we've had it for over 2 years. We use it every night at home. So we DEFINITELY take it with us when we vacation. I would say get one no matter what room you end up with. It just provides a nice, constant sound to sleep by. It works really well for us.

I'm getting the impression that you feel that a Cat. 12 room is substandard. If you have difficulty sleeping, whether it be a Cat. 12 or a Cat. 1, take a white noise machine. Take a look at the deck plan. Determine what is above you or around you. That will determine the noise factor, not what Category you are in.

I think probably what the OP is referring to is the fact that Cat 12 rooms are classified as such only because of their location. (they are exact same room as Cat 11, but are cheaper because they tend to be in "noisier" areas of the ship.) Same with Cats 8 & 9. Exact same rooms, but location determines price.

Another tip is when you are allowed in your cabin after boarding, ask your stateroom host for an air purifier fan for your room. I asked for one and it was free of charge. It is big though, it fit under the desk in the room. The size didn't matter because we never used the desk anyway. It was nice because it created airflow in the room and was perfect white noise. We also sleep with ceiling fans and the air purifier noise reminded me of a ceiling fan. :)

I bought one at bed bath and beyond for like 19.00...it is also a clock so since I needed to bring both it was nice having a combo one. The only clock in the room was this nautical looking one that didn't light up so in the dark I never knew what time it was! We needed it to drown out the crying baby in the room next door a few nights!
