Good morning. Looks like Hubby and I will not be making our annual trek to WDW due to my back injury. We are thinking about going to the White Mountains of NH for a few day with our camper. Has anyone been there? What is there for adults to do? I know there is Santa Land and Story Book Land, but we will not have kids with us so don't think we need to go to those attractions.
We have struggled with the decision not to go to Disney, but feel it would be best to stay close to home this year and close to my doctor if needed.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for vacation spots? We so enjoy camping so thought we would combine that with some sightseeing and local attractions to the area we choose.
Oh yes, our vacation time is the second week of September so it should be nice weather wise.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas on this subject.

Well with a back injury, I'm not sure how much you'd be up to doing any hiking.

However, there are lots of other activities. A few of my favorites are:

Kangamangus highway: One of the most beautiful roadways I've ever seen. It runs between Lincoln and Conway. There are many places to stop and enjoy the scenery.

The Mount Washington Hotel: Sit on the back porch and watch the ever changing view of the mountains.

Enjoy. It is such a beautiful area. Now you've got me thinking about going back!

DS & I just spent 5days in the White Mtns last wknd
We took the tram up Cannon Mtn, hiked Flume Gorge, Lost River, Clark's Bears, ate at Polly's Pancakes, Hobo mini-golf, then stopped at Kellerhaus ice cream on the way back home

I used to go to the whhite Mountains every year with my kids. Not olmy did they enjoy it, but I loved it. For adults, it can be such a nice and relaxing vacation.

I would suggest the places that Virgo and Newholiday mentioned. There is a train that you can take to the top of the mountain, although I never did it. We always drove up, I was never the driver and I always found it terrifying.

My wish is to one day buy a cottage on a lake up there. It is so peaceful.

That's one of our favorite areas to visit. We go at least once a year.

We normally do a B and B, so I can't advise on the camping. But aside from that, there are so many things to do.

If you like hiking Arathusa falls is our favorite hike. Arathusa has a ridge walk over to another falls, Ripley, so you can get an entire days hiking and see the two falls, or just do one for a short hike. Lost River is also fun, but it's more of an attraction than a hike. You walk around the park and get to squeeze (or not) through the course of the River. There are also gardens to relax in and a shop.

If you like to shop, you are near all the outlets at North Conway. There's also a tiny town called Jasper, with a really fantastic Curio/antique shop called Ravenwood. We can spend hours there.

If you want to do one nice dinner, I'd recommend our favorite Inn, Notchland. Most days they take dinner only guests, and it's an amazing gourmet dinner, at a very reasonable cost. (If you look at the site, we're mentioned in the newsletter :) )

The cog railway that someone mentioned to the top of Mount Washington is fun if you are adventurous. There's also the scenic railway for the more faint of heart :)

If you have other specific activities you are interested, let me know!

To add to RacheEllen's list, if you don't want to go to the top of Mt. Washington by car or train. there is the gondola ride up Wildcat Mountain. It faces Mt. Washington on the Tuckerman's Ravine side and is beautiiful scenery.

There is also theater. North Conway currently has The Sound of Music.
I don't know what is playing in Tamworth but you can probably find out at www.mtwashingtonvalley.com.

Com on up! It's beautiful, cool, and dry here!

I second the vote for the Kancamangus/White Mountain area. I have gone vacationing there since I was a child and adore the area. When I finally took my DH to NH before kids, we did the camping thing and then B&B thing. Camping is lovely in that area, although we always seem to go during the rainy times and couldn't seem to get the chill out of our bones. It rains a lot due to the mtns.... hence the lush forests and cascading waterfalls everywhere. We also really enjoyed the B&B's and they have a bunch to choose from. We stayed at the Inn at Thorn Hill in Jackson w/ a delectable breakfast w/ homemade crepes and granola each morning, then DH read the paper and listened to the classical music in the parlor overlooking the mtns, then we got the innkeepers to pack us a lunch for a hike or bike which might be difficult for you due to your injury. We, too, did Arethusa falls and Frankenstein Cliffs and really enjoyed our time, although it would be a difficult hike w/ a back injury.

You can take a gondola up Cannon as we did and had a lunch on the top of the mtn, you can drive or take the Cog up Mt Washington, you can dine in the numerous fabulous restauraunts, meander around the falls and relax and read a book, go sightseeing by car (the roadways thru the notches are fabulous). There is outlet shopping in Conway, although we didn't do much of that, and antiquing not too far away northwest of Conway.

You might want to try a B&B because they cater to your every need and usually don't allow children under 10. So this may be a great chance for you to experience it. Especially if you don't feel you can handle a lot of physical activity. The inns give one the chance to watch the time glide by while rocking on the veranda and drinking a glass of wine. Or you can sit by the pool or kick your feet up in the parlor. And then, if you feel up to it, you can leave the inn, and go check out the mtns and falls. You've got the Darbyfield Inn, Inn at Jackson, Notchland Inn, Christmas Farm Inn, and sooo many more to choose from. You've got the condos too at the base of Loon Mtn and such which look nice. And lots of places to stay in Lincoln and Waterville Valley although they seem a bit farther from Kancamangus.

The great thing about NH is you can see a lot by car and short walking. The lake regions are lovely as well and you might want to go in that direction. I also just checked into the seacoast of NH because I haven't been there in a while and Wentworth by the Sea in Portmouth looks really nice w/ it's clambakes on the beach, views, and shopping nearby. My father reminded me that the water is cold cold cold though.

Good luck choosing. Just like WDW world, I enjoyed NH as a child, but enjoyed it as an adult w/o kids much more!! My DH and I had soooo much fun visiting NH. Now that we have 2 small children, we'll be taking them soon, and I am sure we will have a wonderful time, only we'll be doing different things. But it is wonderful as just a couple!!! Have fun!!!
