Hard to believe, but we leave in 5 days for 13 days at Disney. That being said, I've been tweaking and fine-tuning reservations and realized I had no dinner planned for DS's 8th birthday. So, I have booked Whispering Canyon Cafe for dinner that night. Its been almost 10 years since I've been there.

How is the food? Are there antics anymore (Yes, I know nothing is EVER guaranteed)? Any recent reviews would be most helpful.

We (me, DH and DS 2) went for lunch on a Sunday last month.

The antics seemed a little slow to start (we did get the napkins and pile of straws thrown on the table), but by the end of lunch the ketchup was going full force through the restaurant, and they did the hobby horse races, as well as some skit (we were too far away to hear). A lot did seem to depend on the server, as some were a whole lot louder than others. We saw our server give another of her tables a huge mason jar refill, but we didn't get one at ours.

At other tables we saw kids with straws sticking out of their hair, hats hung up too high for kids to get, etc. There was also a table celebrating a birthday, and their server led everyone at the table in singing happy birthday.

I would make sure they know it's your DS's birthday (call the dining reservation number and ask them to add it to your reservation, and mention it when you check in with the host/hostess) and ask to be seated in the main room. The sections off to the side/in the back didn't get to experience the antics as much.

We had the AYCTE skillet, and it was good... not great, but we all left full and satisfied.

It sounds like a very fun birthday dinner to me! Yes, ask to be seated in the main room. You may have to wait a little longer but I think it's worth it.

We travel with teenage boys and they love WCC for the AYCTE eat aspect including the shakes as well as the antics. They are in their late teens and still join in. The food is better off the menu than the skillet, but with the skillet you do get a lot of variety and as much food as you want. We were on the DDP and everybody had shakes and the skillet and didn't have room for dessert so they let everybody take out a large bottle of mineral water as their dessert. This was mush appreciate as it was early August. The CMs and mgmt. when we were there were great. As has been mentioned, wait for the main room if you want to see the antics at the other tables.

I think you are going to be pleased with your choice of Whispering Canyon for your son's birthday. The antics, the food are bound to please and entertain. I love BBQ and the variety (pork & chicken) here is good with corn & potatoes as sides items.

We've really enjoyed Whispering Canyon. While we weren't there for the antics (and were there at off times so not much was going on) the food was solid and well done. They smoke everything outside the hotel in a smokehouse so their meats are definitely delicious. They also have some of the best baked beans I've ever had. Presuming your dinner is in prime dinner hour from an antics perspective, your son should be elated and his parents will enjoy the food.

I can't think of many better options than Whispering Canyon for an 8YO's birthday. Hobby Horse races, straws getting thrown at you, KETCHUP!!! dont forget the Ketchup :-). This is assuming your kid isn;t going to be terrified of all of this of course :-). Food is mostly barbecue style on the skillet but there are also a la carte options too. Food has always been fine when we have been there. Let them know it is his birthday and I am sure they will make a fuss!
