My understanding is that the complaints were not from customers but from the guests in the lodge. That place is loud, and the noise is not confined to the restaurant, but drifts to the lobby and the rooms. If it was an enclosed space perhaps it would not be so annoying to people who are not in the restaurant.
This makes sense and sounds like the most likely reason.
I did wonder though, if diners have been complaining, it could be a cultural thing. Humour can look quite different depending where you’re from and for some loudness and yelling can be quite confronting. I’m looking forward to eating there irrespective of how the servers perform, but I think a quieter atmosphere is actually something my family will prefer.
On my last visit we dined at 50s Primetime and I was really worried going in that my family would hate it. If we’d got a server with a shrill voice who yelled at us the whole time to eat our veges (I actually saw/heard such a server in another area) my husband would have spent the whole meal with a ‘what were you thinking?’ look on his face. My son might have cried.
However, perhaps due to the magic of Disney and possibly some clued up check-in staff who understood cultural differences, we got someone completely different.
The young male server (aka our Cousin) never raised his voice once. He instead pulled up a chair and entertained us with a dry, sarcastic humour, that had the muscles in our faces hurting from so much laughter. Of 10 TS meals that visit, this was both mine and my husband’s highlight by far.
So, long story short, I’m not saying that Whispering Canyon should have to change to suit people like myself, but I can understand why some people may not have liked the way it was.
