Whispering Canyon changes?

I've got a family trip planned for end of January, and was planning on Whispering Canyon for dinner one night. I've never been, but have always heard it's a great time with the food and entertainment. I read somewhere though that they've really scaled back on the entertainment portion of the dinner service. Anyone been recently that can offer some thoughts on this?

I was there in June and at 18:00 hours there was just 4 families in the place. The waiter told us he could not yell our for ketchup but we could. Except for throwing straws at us they were not allowed to do anything like they used to. An example on out 2015 trip I asked for a platter with no pork on it because I am Jewish and practicing. Well I also drink a lot of diet coke and after my 3rd one the waitress brought out one of the huge glasses with diet coke and they had taped a piece of paper on it with the word PORK I almost died laughing. The place is like a morgue now. The food is good but without the fun I will not leave MK to go eat there again. Maybe if we stay there but its not worth a special trip.

I'm going in August. We go every trip. I'll post what's happening then. Maybe it will lighten up with the restrictions.

Sadly, it’s not what it used to be. The waiters can’t even throw straws at you, best he could do was throw a few on the table. At least they still had a horse race, but to little fan fare. The food is still good, but I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way just for that without the antics. We were there a few weeks ago with a group of 19, on several different reservations we wanted to combine. They told us they couldn’t guarantee we’d be near one another. So I went squeaky wheel on them to try and achieve an 11/8 (kids adults) split and that was a huge problem. When we actually sat down......I honestly think we might have been the only table in the place. It was dead, tons of empty tables.

I canceled our ADR.

It’s sad. Used to be such a fun dining experience. My kids have such fond memories. Little one used to always ask to “eat at the ketchup restaurant”.

yea, unfortunately there were too many complaints from people who didn't know the atmosphere of the restaurant going in. The food was OK at best. It's permanently off the list for us now that the magic is gone

We ate there yesterday. The only difference was the servers couldn't yell for ketchup, but encouraged us to do so. There were so many antics we stayed for dessert. Straws in hair, napkin hats and capes, servers being "jailed" and just tons of attention from wait staff. I would definitely keep and make ADRs there. I think the complaints from the change may have reversed some things. Now, there were several families that didnt want to play along. They were left alone. The rest of us had tons of attention. And the kids still did the pony ride across the restaurant.

Well that's good to hear, maybe all those empty tables told them something.

That was our experience in late May of this year as well. We had a wonderful time and have definitely added it to our list of places to go when we’re at WDW after having never been. And when we dined it was a Sunday night and the place was packed so...

Glad you had fun. I did feel bad seeing someone cancel their reservation. A trip to the WL is always worthwhile, and the food is still good. We just missed the fun. We even asked our waiter about it, and there wasn’t much he could do. Our guys did get the ketchup but even that wasn’t the fun it used to be. I hope they get back to their old selves there!

My understanding is that the complaints were not from customers but from the guests in the lodge. That place is loud, and the noise is not confined to the restaurant, but drifts to the lobby and the rooms. If it was an enclosed space perhaps it would not be so annoying to people who are not in the restaurant.

This makes sense and sounds like the most likely reason.

I did wonder though, if diners have been complaining, it could be a cultural thing. Humour can look quite different depending where you’re from and for some loudness and yelling can be quite confronting. I’m looking forward to eating there irrespective of how the servers perform, but I think a quieter atmosphere is actually something my family will prefer.

On my last visit we dined at 50s Primetime and I was really worried going in that my family would hate it. If we’d got a server with a shrill voice who yelled at us the whole time to eat our veges (I actually saw/heard such a server in another area) my husband would have spent the whole meal with a ‘what were you thinking?’ look on his face. My son might have cried.
However, perhaps due to the magic of Disney and possibly some clued up check-in staff who understood cultural differences, we got someone completely different.

The young male server (aka our Cousin) never raised his voice once. He instead pulled up a chair and entertained us with a dry, sarcastic humour, that had the muscles in our faces hurting from so much laughter. Of 10 TS meals that visit, this was both mine and my husband’s highlight by far.

So, long story short, I’m not saying that Whispering Canyon should have to change to suit people like myself, but I can understand why some people may not have liked the way it was.

Except guests are still told to yell. And they do. Or at least they have been the last few days that I've been here. And the servers are still loud, they just don't yell for ketchup. Only the guests do that.

I understand. I am not saying the antics are gone, or that things will not go back to the way they were. I am saying that I heard the reason for management tryign to tone it down was because the noise was disturbing resort guests who complained. Not the restaurant guests. They were fine with the noise and antics, however they signed on for that. REsort guests did nto and they were not happy.

I am not sure what the answer is here, but I do believe that if there is a winner in this tug of war, it is not going to be WCC>

It's the end of the world. They can't yell for Ketchup and they can't assault me with straws any more!!! Cancel my ADR Disney!!! This is as bad as when Ohana replaced the pineapple!!!

To be honest, the food was just ok and the antics aren't enough to get me to go back anyway.

I had made an ADR based on our last trip - our son loved it - then saw about the antics being put away so I cancelled - I have since rebooked it on one of our MK days, cause I feel like the boat ride and food alone will be worth going BUT I am still on the fence.

I went once many many years ago. Did not like it, but BBQ is not my favorite to begin with, so.....

Just checking to see if the antics are still going on? We are eating there next Saturday and if it the antics have been throttled down, we will cancel. My superhero obsessed DS6 and DS8 picked this as the only restaurant they want to eat even over trying the Universal Superhero Dinner (thank goodness).

Got back yesterday. Went on August 24th. The server said they had to quiet down. People need to yell for Ketchup instead of the server which people did many times. The server did holler once to get a date for a little girl. We still enjoyed ourselves and will still go.
