I have been asking alot of questions about buying into the DVC the one thing I think I haven't asked is with the changes that Disney has made would anyone still buy reslae or would they still go through Disney?

We have just over 300 points. The majority were purchased direct, and we just added a 50 point resale before 3/20. So, all off our points can still be used on all DVC options. With that said, I don't think I would buy direct from Disney, since I don't really see us using our points for anything other than DVC stays. The savings on buying resale are substantial. As DVD adds new resorts, if there was one that really appealed to me, I might change my mind. . . . but probably not.

We didn't buy into the Disney hype of being able to use your points at over 500 destinations. We checked on what it would cost if we paid out of pocket verses the hassle of using points and RCI. True it can be done but it isn't for us.

We bought into the DVC to stay at WDW so the changes don't affect us other than hurting our selling price when we sell.

We would definitely still buy resale. Using points for a cruise or any trade out is highly unlikely for us and the cost difference would not justify having that option there "just in case". We bought DVC to stay at DVC resorts which is where its greatest value is.

For us, it would depend on which resort we wanted to buy, and which UY we wanted. For the current resorts, there is sometimes not a huge difference in price to buy direct, plus there are added benefits of not waiting for a few months to be in the system, using a credit card to purchase, taking advantage of any incentives, etc. Obviously if I were buying at resorts where resale prices are 50% of Disney direct prices, there would be no question about buying resale (yes, definitely).

I always believe in buying where I want to go/stay, just in case anything happens. So I would pick a home resort that I was happy with, and then look at prices. We would probably never use our DVC points for cruises or other accommodations, so the resale/direct doesn't matter to us there. BUT, the home resort would matter.

So

1) pick a home resort
2) run the numbers for resale versus direct (include any incentives or current UY points and deduct those from the price, plus CC miles earned)
3) if the price is close, then weigh the wait for resale (2-3 months)

Good luck with your decision!

We will probably will only use it for WDW but we would like the option to go on a cruise if we wanted too. I doubt we'll go over seas but we would love to go to hawaii..

The long version: For the first purchase, if you are in a hurry buy direct. If you are not in a hurry then buy resale. Buying direct means you have those points to use at the end of the day plus you can put it on your credit card but buying resale will take 2.5 months and is not painless in any way. Personally, it is a waste of points to use them for cruises or travel but if that is what you potentially want to do then direct is the only choice, just be aware the ability to use the points this way could be removed (and probably will be removed) at any point by Disney. So this should not be a deciding factor. You can not count on anything outside what the contract specifically dictates. If you are already an owner and want to add on they going direct will be easy, give you full use points and the add on will be attached to your current contract. Buying resale will be considerably cheaper but will be a separate contract and a separate deed plus you may not end up with the same UY as you have now...

Short version: If money is no object stay with Disney, if money is important then go resale.

If we add on, I will more than likely buy resale. If I want to go on a cruise or go other places, I will rent our points out, and pay cash for the trip. In all honesty, I think that would be easier anyway. When you trade out, it's not like you can go to Member Services and just say, "I want to go to this distination over these dates, with this view and this size room." It's just not that easy, as it's all based on availability.

What I'm interested in is what else Disney will do to differentiate the two (resale vs. direct) and to the DVC program as a whole. Some believe DVC may tier the program so that the more direct points (or resale points prior to 3/21) you have, the more discounts/benefits you will get. If the changes stay as they are, I'd definitely buy resale, no questions asked. But, if they make additional changes (e.g., tiered benefits and discounts), and I'm on the cusp of a threshhold, I may buy points directly through Dis to gain those advantages. Only time will tell. :confused3

One thing to remember. Disney is only obligated to one thing...to allow you to book at your home resort based on availability through the end of your contract. If you buy in, they could take away everything I mentioned above tomorrow and water it down to booking only at your home resort. So, as many people will point out, but where you want to stay and realize all benefits will come and go (and potentially come again) with time. They are not contractual.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

Everyone is making great points on whether I should buy resale or direct. I guess either way we will use it most for WDW for our kids

Just a brief clarification -- using DVC points at the approximately 600 RCI locations accessible through DVC is NOT affected at all by the recent change. ALL DVC owners still have access to RCI, no matter how they purchase.

I can't make any intellectually-honest argument for buying DVC direct. I think the disparity is so large (ranging from 10% to more than 50%) that resale is just about the only way to go.

Most of the arguments for buying direct I read are really nothing more than "I want what I WANT...and I want it right NOW!"

A major luxury purchase like DVC is not something to be rushed into. If I couldn't find what I wanted resale right now, in all honesty I'd just wait a year or two and get it resale then.

I completely agree. With the incentives and changes to resale, it's really hard to justify paying that much more for Aulani and BLT, much less the other resorts!

It's obvious that Disney is targeting the new buyer who doesn't know any better.

Resale, thats how i went. I couldn't make any reasonable sense to spend that moeny. When i did the tour last nov. the price was $120pt for blt. 160pts was $19000. I bought 182pts at $60 ppt. I saved over $8000. I can't see why disney is still selling ssr at $99. It makes no sense to me.

Unless you are buying Aulani which is not on the market yet (or if it is, I have not seen one), I have to agree that it is really hard to justify the direct purchase, especially when Disney is now charing closing.

I did an add on of 30 points in August and at the time, even though I spent more, it was exactly what I wanted and needed and not available via resale.

But, for anyone looking to get in to the game now, really should consider resale. And, they do need to resale that the use of points for Disney collection, etc. that are available to direct purchasers can still be eliminated down the road from everyone.

To spend thousands extra for something that is still a perk, even for direct buyers, is a hard pill to swallow.

IMO, resale really is the way to go. Just be patient and find the contract that suits your needs.

Aulani is precisely the resort I was thinking about when I said I would just wait a couple of years and pick a contract up on the resale market.

I also seen the resale contract for Aulani.

I would agree with most here and say that I would have no problem buying resale if/when we decide to add on. The cost difference is too much to justify the direct price. The current restrictions really don't matter to us.

Good Luck with your decision!

The restrictions aren't a big deal to us, and since Disney charges for closing costs too now, the difference between direct and resale is even bigger. We plan on doing resale if/when we decide to add on.

Like to see Buckeye fans on this board and I completely agree with you. After our last trip we really like the convenience of the Boardwalk and are seriously thinking of adding some more points there. If we do it will definietlly be through resale.
