I am always a forward cabin girl, but especially for the Fantasy as there have been many, many reports of bad vibrations in the aft portion of the ship (much moreso than the other ships, which is why I asked).

There is a thread that links to the stateroom reports at the top of the page - you could always check reports for the cabins you're looking at.

We've been told that the boat has more motion in the Front versus the AFT so we always end up in the aft of the ship. Frankly, I'd like to try the front and avoid the loud kids area.

We have been in the front on 4 out 5 cruises. We have never had a problem.

We prefer forward. Our boys are older and when cruise without the, we close to adult areas. Very quiet.

Avoid the Fantasy aft due to the unusually severe vibration issues that have often been reported from people staying in Fantasy aft staterooms. This isn't a problem on the Dream, just the Fantasy, which appears to have some sort of mechanical issue in relation to this that DCL doesn't want to fix.

The Carnival Pride has this same issue (and it's sister Spirit class ships don't).

I don't think it's a mechanical issue, I think it's a resonance frequency issue. Just a guess on my part, no special knowledge.

As to the ops question, if you are going with two staterooms, why don't you look at the options for cat 9? That might get you the location you prefer, with connecting, at a lower price, and I don't think you'd miss the extra square feet, as you have two rooms.

Would you be able to relax with the kids in a non-connecting room? If you'd be even the slightest bit uncomfortable, don't do it.
