Which to choose? Dolphin, Swan or Hilton DTD?

After not being able to get a DVC stay we're thinking of staying at a non-Disney run hotel for the first time. I'm a little nervous!
Which would you choose and why? We are Hilton honors Gold card memebers, but have heard bad reviews about the DTD location. What's the difference between the Dolphin and Swan other than the Swan being $20 more a night?
Anything else I should know? Thanks!

Difference in S/D is minimal, but the Dolphin is bigger, and has more of a convention feel to it. You will see a higher % of guests there not going to the parks, as opposed to the Swan. Aside from that, there isn't much else.

Of the 3 choices, I would start by digging up the best possible rated at the Hilton, then compare that to the S/D. The Hilton DTD location isn't as convenient as the S/D of course, but if the rate is good enough, I would try it. All things being equal, I would pick the Swan for a family WDW vacation.

definitely the swan or dolphin.

You might want to get a regular SPG card, after you apply call them and give them your Hilton info and they should bump you to Gold status.

S/D is a superior location. Very easy access to EPCOT, MGM, Boardwalk. Good restaurants to choose from all around you. The groto pool is one of the best pools on property. We prefer Dolphin over Swan because it feels more like the center of the action.

If you have a family - do the Dolphin
Dolphin has the 24 hour open Picabu snack area, laundry and closer to the Grotto pool.
Swan has great views and queen beds.
Both allow you to walk to EPCOT and boat to STUDIO's.
Better location than any DTD resort.

the Dolplhin. We've been going for years there with kids. We love the convience of walking or boating to Epcot, Boardwalk and MGM. So many things to do at night without getting in your car or waiting for buses. You might wait for a boat but it's so much more pleasant than standing at a bus stop. ;)

I agree that the Dolphin is more in the center of the action. I like the Picabu which was 24 hours counter service type food (not sure if still is).
The pool is great. MY kids liked it more than POR when we tried that. Though they loved ASMovie too. The Swan has some character meals saved us a couple of times when we couldn't get into another meal at Epcot.

We have stayed at the Swan and Dolphin and LOVE the location, much cheaper than the BC/YC or BW, the last 2 times the rates are $125 per night. We are going again next month, at the Swan for $150 per night, F&W baby!

We like the Swan better, the rooms are identical but the Swan doesnt have as many convention people as the Dolphin and seems much quieter.

We stayed at the Double Tree in the DTD area once and and while the resort is nice we did not like the location at all.

Dolphin! or Swan...location, location, LOCATION! Not ot mention REAL coffee 24/7....STARBUCKS! I love the WDW resorts..but if not choosing one of them. S/D is the way to go. Join SPG....start earning points and even silver members get an upgrade if available.:thumbsup2

Our first family Disney trip was to the Dolphin. We adored it. When you walk in the lobby and look up there are twinkling lights in the ceiling, we love the fountain and the lobby. The beds are awesome. We were there in Nov of 06 and DD swam in the grotto and loved it as well. We had a view of the AC vent and still enjoyed it lol. Course we would love to have a view but have never gotten one of the premium views so it is not a big deal to us. I am sure if we ever accidently get one it is going give us a change of heart.

We have since stayed at BC and will say BC beats Dolphin hands down ... but lets be honest there are not many places in the world like BC either. ;) I would definately choose a Epcot location over a DTD location. You are so close to all things Disney and another plus is if you get to homesick for the Disney CM's you could always pop into BC and see Art. ;)

We have reservations for the Swan because we couldn't get a DVC reservation for this trip as well. After much research I chose the Swan and am looking forward to the Heavenly Bed because every time I stay at a Disney deluxe or villa, I cannot understand why they use such awful poly blend bedding. :scared1:

I vote for the Swan!

As you can see I'm a big Swan fan but you can't beat staying at an Epcot resort. Epcot and MGM are both in walking distance and the views are spectacular, at least during my stays.

I prefer the Swan as it's a smaller hotel and more quiet. I also prefer the double queen beds for my 2 DS who are adults now. The pool is fantastic and very large.

Good luck in your decision but of course it all comes down to the rate.

Do they offer Starbucks coffee packets in the room? A hotel I recently stayed at had Starbucks in the room and it was wonderful compared to the standard hotel brand that most places offer.

I appreciate this thread since I have often considered choosing the Swan or Dolphin, and still feel like I'm on the property. However, the promise of Starbucks does not thrill this coffee fan...too strong for me! I might have to walk over to the BC/YC just for the Nescafe!!:coffee:
BTW, how far IS the walk to EPCOT and/or MGM?

The coffee in the room I believe was Yuban but I'm not sure as I didn't use the coffee machine.

The walk to Epcot is about 10 minutes and MGM is about 20.

We did not have Starbucks coffee packets during our last stay there, but that was almost 3 years ago, so perhaps a more recent visitor could post....the coffee was in Picabu's ( formerly Tubbi's) I do find the food fairly expensive at the S/D...we like to hit the Boardwalk Bakery as you can have sandwiches made and carry those to the park...they are large enough for us to split....ESPN is not a bad deal either or ordering a quick pizza.
The walk to MGM is not short....but an option...let's see, about 20 minutes? About a mile , I think...My DH did it in under 10 one day when he forgot his ticket...but he is 6'4" and can move when he wants to! There is a paved walk all along the Crescent lake that leads to the entrance of MGM, you just follow alon that walkway. It is nice at the end of the day if you do not care to wait for a boat or ithe boat line is relally crowded. We tend to walk vs. standing...either way we are on our feet!
Epcot walk seems shorter to me, less than a mile for sure. The path takes you to the International Gateway entrance, by France/England. So pretty. I like to walk as you can see the resort grounds, animals, just more peaceful to us. We use the Friendship boats a ton also, but do like to walk. The boats make up tp 3 stops, so it can be around the same timing to walk vs boating, just a matter of preference and tired feet! You can also mix it up...get off at different spots and walk back if you choose from say, Y/C to the S/D and enjoy the Boardwalk.
I think it is worth it ot give the S/D properties a chance, but they have gotten up there is price like everything else, but again, we have always had a great stay there.

ok, since that is not showing up, here you go...
S/D to International Gateway: 11.5 minutes....0.49 miles
S/D to MGM: 18 minutes.....0.83 miles

What is an SPG card? We've considered the Swan for a future trip once DD turns 10 and we have 4 adults (according to Disney) and we probably won't be doing the DDP. Also, is this card better than the teacher discount I've heard about?

Starwood Prefered Guest....you can add up points from stays at any Starwood property and use them for free nights...yes, FREE nights even at the WDW location...or toward room upgrades...also being an SPG member also helps if there are any complimentary upgrades from say, stabdard to lake view, lake to balconey etc. Also possible late check-out...usually there is a seperate desk for check-in that we ahve found lovely....go to the site and check into it...it does not cast anything, and I believe you may be able to have points from American Airlines transfered...not too sure about that anymore or what the conditions are, but we did it once some years back. I find it to be exactly what it says...you are a "prefered" guest over a non-SPG member.

We prefer the Swan because of the queen sized bed,s compactness of the resort, (less walking back to the room after a long day in the parks) and the Swan is the lst bus stop. If its crowded and you are at the Dolphin you could be standing on the bus. Also the Swan sleeps 4 and the Dolphin will sleep 5 with a rollaway or air mattress.
