One in our party of 3 will be celebrating a birthday during our visit next year. Which restaurants will we have better luck having this occasion acknowledged? What's been your experience?

It depends on what kind of acknowledgement you're interested in. At MM they made my husband a chef's hat. At Biergarten the band will announce a birthday if you let the server know.

I was thinking more along the lines of Mickey head birthday confetti at the table, a free birthday cupcake or a card signed by Disney characters. She wouldn't want attention drawn to herself so she wouldn't like an announcement or singing like you find at your local restaurants.

At Crystal Palace, they sprinkled mickey glitter on our table and brought a card out signed by Winnie the Pooh and friends. Restaurant Marrakesh brought a dessert, put a fez on my DH's head, and sang happy birthday. Oh, and BOG brought out a plate of the gray stuff. I think it's important to not expect anything, and that way it is fun if you do get something but not upsetting if you don't. We book a lot of character dinners, so I brought a card to each character meal that was themed to those characters for the characters to sign, which was a fun souvenir. :)

I would definitely recommend Crystal Palace then. Let the hostess know when you check in that you're celebrating a birthday. I still recommend bringing a birthday card for the characters to sign, so that way if they don't bring one out at the end you'll still know the bday guest will have a special memento.

Chef Mickey's did exactly that. We were celebrating LOs birthday and the CM brought a special cupcake for him - it had a flat chocolate Mickey face and Mickey sprinkles! They also brought out another Birthday button (we had forgotten ours in the room) and a signed character card.

Every place does something different and there is no guarantee of acknowledging a birthday, so first and foremost don't count on something. That said we've never told a restaurant ahead of time about a birthday, but have had our birthday buttons acknowledged several times. I've found that signature restaurants seem to go the extra mile and do a higher end dessert.

This. It is up to the CM at the time, there is no guarantee of anything being done. My younger son has spent several birthdays at WDW, and it has ranged from nothing done to a cupcake (most often) to confetti on the table (once, I *think* Cape May but it has been too long). I love the idea of having the characters sign a card!

I've had pretty good luck at any of the character meals, I know at Crystal Palace and Akershus I've gotten cards and cupcakes.

All of these are at the discretion of the server so you cannot guarantee that it will happen at a restaurant. With thousands celebrating something special everyday at DW there is no way Disney can recognize everyone. If she wears her birthday button she will get Happy Birthday wishes from many castmembers, but that is the only thing that is guaranteed. We've gotten cupcakes or other desserts, confetti on the table, cards, champagne (on our anniversary) at some places and absolutely no acknowledgement at others. If you want recognition for certain it is best to plan and pay for it yourself.

Some restaurants will ask if anyone is celebrating a birthday and make a single announcement/recognition for everyone so she wouldn't be singled out, but one place I remember seeing the servers sing Happy Birthday at a table was at Via Napoli.

I am so glad you pointed out that it was up tot the server. We were celebrating a birthday one trip and when we were entering the CP for dinner we saw a table decorated with Mickey head confetti and little ribbons. It was so pretty! But it was not for us! LOL! Please do not get your hopes up because you never know what will happen. Sometimes a server has the time, sometimes no.

We generally are celebrating something on every trip....goodness knows if I can find a reason to plan another trip I will jump on it..... But I never expect anything because that is the best way to find yourself felling let down. With that said, if you are going to be surprised with fun, Disney is the place to be!

Our son got all three for his birthday last fall at Crystal Palace.

character meals are great about doing SOMETHING, but like a PP said- if you WANT something, its best to pre-purchase it or plan something yourselves.

I LOVE the card idea - I know they do them at the character meals (i got one at every meal last year) but its a great idea just in case

We've had exactly what you mentioned at Chef Mickey, Tusker House, Crystal Palace, and CRT over the years.

To get a card (if you get a card) did you just tell the hostess when you checked in you were celebrating a b-day? I can't find anywhere to note a b-day when making dining reservations. We are celebrating our dd's b-day and she is so excited as she's always wanted to be at Disney for her bday. We are going to CP for breakfast and CM for dinner. That's a great idea about taking our own card as well to get the characters to sign.

Make sure you get your daughter a birthday button when you check in to your resort. Have her wear it everywhere the entire time you're there. You never know what she'll end up getting. Our son got a pair of Mickey hands at check-in, then several different stickers and cards in the parks through the week. She'll get told happy birthday constantly.

Our son had his birthday button on at BOG and he got a plate of the grey stuff and a card from Belle.

I booked our dining reservations yesterday for my daughter's 16th birthday surprise trip. I called (407)WDW-DINE and asked the cast member on the phone to make a note on our reservations about it being my daughter's birthday.
