I have noticed that the resales that are available at Vero Beach and Hilton Head are much cheaper per point than at the disney resorts. I wonder? If you buy at these resorts VB or HH and have the ability to book at the DVC resorts in Orlando at the seven month window, and aren't too picky which resort you get, is it a big deal to buy into those resorts if you are basically going to use the orlando DVC resorts and not the home resorts?

I am not sure I would do that. For one thing, VB has the highest maintenance fees. Right now, the cheapest fees are at OKW. As more and more points get sold at SSR, there will be more and more reasons to buy where you want to stay. This might not be true of OKW and SSR because of their size, but it will be VERY important for VWL and BCV, which are quite small resorts.

Vero Beach Maintenance fees are the highest. Hilton Head Maintenance fees are just behind OKW but the 11 month window at OKW Guarantees you a place at WDW during prime times. The Hilton Head 7 month window might put you on a waiting list at the prefered WDW resorts during prime times.

I guess that is why they are not priced at the same level as the other resorts. I will be staying at the Old Key West in December for the first time. I trying to talk my husband into buying into one of the resorts but he wants to wait. I told him that they will only get more expensive if we wait, even in resale. I just thought that a small contract at a good price might convince him to get on board. thanks for the replies!!!

OK, I'll state for the record that I don't typically buy into rumors.

But the one concern I would have about owning all of my points at a non-WDW resort is the possibility that VB and HHI could (emphasize COULD) be sold off at some point.

Disney Vacation Development owns the resorts. Disney Vacation Club is the timeshare managment company. It's always possible that VB and HHI could be sold-off to another management company if Disney were to decide to divest themselves of off-site properties.

Many will say the odds of this happening are remote, and personally I agree. There have been rumors in the past that Disney would part with VB and HHI...obviously unsubstantiated. But 40 years is a LONG time for business plans and management philosophies to change. Even if Disney were do decide to get out of the timeshare business altogether, by owning at one of the Orlando-based properties, you're insured of a room on Disney property. But, if Disney were to sell off (or at least farm out the management of) VB and HHI, you'd lose the benefit of staying at one of the WDW resorts.

If your intention is to use the points at a Disney World resort, it makes sense to own one of those properties.
