which phone?

good morning all!
my husband and i are debating which new phones to get. we are currently verizon customers and love the coverage (never had any issues). his work will buy him a new phone and we are debating the droid, blackberry or i phone. if we do i phone we need to change carriers. please give me your thoughts. when we see other people use the i phone, we think we would love them. currently, my phone doesn't even have a camera and is very old! i am not fussy. my husband uses his current blackberry for work all the time, but it is getting really old and starting to have problems.

We've got the HTC Hero which is a droid ....I wouldn't trade it for anything! I love this phone !!!! The great thing about Droids is that the app stores are getting bigger all the time and they have tons of really great apps to choose from. ( they actually just released a free Amazon Kindle App for Android!! )

The camera and video camera on the HTC is fantastic. Obviously not as great as my regular camera, but takes pretty terrific pictures. There's not alot I can think of that the phone doesn't have. I never thought I'd use the features but once you have them, you can't live without them !!

I just got an iphone a couple months ago and I would be lost without it now! I never used to text or get online with my old phoen even though it did have capabilities. The iphone is so easy, I do it all the time!!

i have a motorola droid. I have issues with the sensitivity of the screen, as i hang up on people all the time. I like a lot of the features...but I miss my Blackberry Storm, sadly. I am also on Verizon.

If you get a droid phone, make sure you get one that either already has the 2.2 update or is definitely going to get it. I thought I was supposed to get it this week, but haven't yet.

The droid os is really fast and there are some really great features. I probably would have a hard time not having the Navigation now, which will also let you layer gas stations and restaurants on top. That's pretty cool. I like that in an email I can highlight a phone number and then double click it to call it. There are great, free apps.

another note.....my husband's phone will be covered by his work, and verizon is having a buy one, get one free on the blackberry right now. so, my phone would be free, but we would be with verizon another 2 years, and would have to use the blackberry.

I am not sure that I would recommend buying a Blackberry on Verizon at this moemnt in time. BlackBerry has just relesed the Torch 9800 with the BlackBerry 6 operating system to generally favorable reviews but only on ATT at the moment. Most agree that the Blackberry upgrade has been long overdue, so don't lock yourself in the old technology for the next 2 years. At a minimum make sure any new phone is upgradable to the new OS.

And if you are going to move to ATT, go for the still superior iPhone. We love our iPhones and have no problem with service or dropped calls, but this does vary by geographic area.

For non technical people, especially those with an Apple store nearby and/or Mac computers, the iPhone is currently the most consumer friendly of the smartphones. When I was reading on daringfireball.com how to sync the Android Galaxy S just released on T-Mobile, to a Mac, it made me glad once agian that I have an iPhone. We just went through the whole phone thing. The only reason I am posting is to wonder if you are aware of the data plans that will be associated with these new phones? The cost is per phone for the plans. We are Verizon too, and with the Blackberry or any other smart phone, it was a required $29.99 per phone per month.

When we realized this, it was a deal breaker for us and we went a different route in our phone decision.

If you know about this great! Just want to be sure you are aware since you said your current phone is older...

thank you! we are definitely taking all of the cost into consideration before we make our final decision. my husband's work gives him a monthly stipend for his phone, so most of his cost will be covered. i just need to decide if i want one. we may change our home phone plan if we upgrade to these phones.

I'm going through this right now. I had the original Blackberry Storm (day of release) and it never gave me problems until I dropped it one too many times. I have been using a friends only Env2 and I have realized that I can live without having the data plan. The only thing that I miss more than anything else is the wonderful calendar that my Storm had and it's ability to snyc with my Outlook computer at home. So I just bought myself and ipod touch and I am going to carry it and the env2. I don't want to carry 2 devices, but I have a big enough purse

To the OP - good luck with your decision. Before I made the choice not to get another smartphone I was going to get the Droid Incredible.

I am a BlackBerry Storm 2 owner (Verizon) - it's a great phone, but if you are craving iPhone-style apps, you may want to look elsewhere, as IMO, BlackBerry is still stuck in the "business user" mindset.

And yes, if you go iPhone, you will have to change carriers to AT&T (check to see how AT&T works in your local area before you commit to anything!).

Also, keep in mind some opinions around here may be heavily-biased towards the iPhone (as for many, that is something of a pre-requisite for being part of the "in" crowd on "The DIS" - they even have a dedicated thread, and all).

That said, I would give the Motorola Droid at Verizon a second look - it's emerging as a serious rival to the iPhone (with apps and all!), plus you wouldn't have the headache of swapping networks.
