Okay here's the story:

My car blew an engine last week and is now resting peacefully in the junk heap in the sky

So I have to purchase a new vehicle very quickly. I drive about 45minutes to work each way so gas mileage is a thought. However I do live in the country so 4-wheel drive would be useful.

Which one would you pick and why? I have to make a decision tomorrow:

1 - Jeep Liberty - great cash incentives now but a little pricey and poor gas mileage.

2 - Chevy Cobalt or Malibu - good gas mileage and considerably cheaper

3 - Other - please specify

Thanks everyone!

Is this a family car? How many people do you need to carry?

I got a new Saturn Vue in June and really like it.

I drove a Cobalt rental the last time in WDW and it was nice but too small for taking out on the interstate highway on a regular basis or carrying the whole family.

I would not want to have to buy the gas for a Jeep.

Have fun with whatever you get. A new car is fun.

With only those two options - Jeep Liberty.

It is the bigger of the two cars.
We haven't had good luck with chevys.

As a side note - I would rather spend more money on a car that I love than spend less money on a car that I just like. You are going to have it for awhile, it should be something that you aren't going to regret buying in 3-6-12 months.

There are several good all wheel drive sedans that good gas mileage.

The Toyota Matrix, The Ford Fusion, All the Subarus, The Dodge Caliber just to name a few.
