Although we are Nascar fans and watch the races every chance we get, we have yet to go to a race. It is almost time for me to turn in my vacation requests for 2007. I'd like to go to a race that is no more than 10 hours away from home. So we were looking at Richmond, Michigan, Dover or Chicago. Pocono is close too but I don't want to go to that kind of track.

Have you been to any of these tracks? How was it? I have lots of ????

I would choose Richmond. Short track racing....Yeah!

I've been to Watkins Glen, Dover & Pocono. my least favorite was pocono. We could not see a thing because of the banking & we ended up sitting under the bleachers until security kicked us out. I really like Dover. We went a couple of years ago & we knew someone who was in with childress & we got garage passes. It was so awesome & we got many autographs and unbelievable pictures.

Give Martinsville, VA a good look too. It's a TIGHT short track and is always has pretty colorful racing.

I love Richmond and also Charlotte for the spring race. Charlotte is nice because you can go to all the race shops and look around. We always go every year and have a ball!

I would recommend Martinsville also. I used to hate short track racing but now I can't wait for it.

DH has been to all the tracks you mentioned but Chicago and he always says his favorite is Richmond! This is even with going to the Twin 125s last year. Dover is his runner up-he's been there four times.

Darlington is probably a 12 hour drive for you. Personally, I'd love to see a race there!

Oh you are so lucky. I have not been to a race either but hopefully will within the next few years. Myself, I love short tracks.

DH and several of our family members have season tickets for both Michigan races, we've gone for several years. We camp for the week at Greenwood Acres (about a half-hour drive from the track) and just drive in for qualifying, and then the race on Sunday. We have seats really high up (row 52 and 54) just after turn 4. And they've made a lot of improvements recently to the grounds, and have the driver trailers (where they sell stuff) arranged so it's much easier and more fun to shop and not quite as congested with people. They have lots of stuff going on before the race. Lots of fun.

If you go to Michigan I would suggest NOT parking in the Penske lots. You will be FOREVER getting out! The first year DH and I parked there, it took us 4 HOURS to get out of the parking lot after the race. :furious:

We park at someone's home (I think it's Murray's) on Vicary Road and just walk over to the race. It's much easier to get out of their yard, than it is to get out of the parking lots. Yes, it's $20 to park there but we feel it's worth it. We go early in the morning and cook breakfast, sit and visit with family, then around 10:00 we walk over.

As a few have said - try Martinsville! It is wonderful. Beautiful area nad the traffic seems to flow easily in and out. We do the fall race.We are only an hour or so from Richmond but refuse to go because of the traffic nightmare! We have friends who leave before sunup so they can avoid the traffic and it is a nighttime race! Charlotte is also great! We do the spring race here! Have fun!

If I were picking for myself---- Talladega for the fall races---less crowds. I never been to a race there, but have tour the track plus I know some of the workers. That is what 13+ hours to Erie? You can fly into either Birmingham or Atlanta and get there without much trouble, but the hotels in the 100 mile range do increase their rates a lot.

I have relatives that like to go to Bristol (8 hours to Erie) and Atlanta (almost 13).

Thanks for all the input! You have definitely help give us more to think about. I'll share this with Brer_Papa when he gets home and see what we come up with. I need to take a look at Martinsville for sure.

I have another question......

How to buy tickets? Do you buy tickets separately for qualifying, Busch and Nextel? or can we get a "package" with all 3 somewhere? I see loads of online sites selling tickets.....where do you buy yours? I'm such a rookie at this. TIA

I bought mine directly from the track (DH's twin 125's were a valentine's gift from me). Martinsville and Richmond have me on their mailing list and Dover and Richmond have DH on theirs. Contact the tracks directly-most have some sort of package deal.

Thanks Poohnatic! That helps.

I've been all over looking and it's making this more confusing. Looking at the dates of the races and DH's work schedule to consider, I'm now leaning towards Dover in June. Besides, I have an uncle who lives in Dover we can visit.
