DD has enjoyed her Rio for the last 2 years. Yesterday it died. We leave for WDW next Friday. :cheer2: I would like to get her a new MP3 player. She does not want an Ipod. (only kid I know who doesn't but she downloads off Walmart and Yahoo music) Can anyone recomend a moderatly priced player preferably with FM, at least 512MB, easy to load and good sound? Thanks

an ipod PLAYS mp3.
ipod is the physical machine
mp3 is the format the music is in

ipod is turning into the 'generic' word almost for mp3 player (like Kleenex. heheh)

MP3 is the file format slang for an MPEG-1 layer 3 type file, one that contains audio data. An MP3 PLAYER is a device that can read said files and reproduce their contents.

[EDIT]: Beaten to it!

iRiver sounds good.

ok so what you're saying is they are basically the same thing?? :confused3

My son also has an IRiver and loves it. He has used it daily since March and has never had one bit of problem with it!! Found it at circuit city. :flower:

no

there are many types of mp3 PLAYERS - in this category fall iPods (by Apple - which is the heavy hitter in this category), and then players by Creative, Rio, iRiver, Sony.

when you download a song...or "rip" it from a CD...it's stored as a .mp3 on your computer. That is the format that MOST players recognize (there are other formats out there as well..and some players recognize multiple formats)

to make sense to you - the title of this thread should read "Which MP3 player, not IPOD"

DH says Creative Labs MP3 players are good. We bought DD14 a Nano for X-mas. It was $85.

I have a Zen by Creative, and I LOVE it! In fact, when I bought it about a year ago, I was originally going to get an iPod, but the Zen was cheaper, with more memory, and IMHO, some better features. One of the big reasons I decided against an iPod was the battery -- you can't change it yourself, or at least not on last year's model. I'm not sure if they have models with FM tuners though.

For the poster who asked what the difference is...iPod is the brand or model, so people who've mentioned iRiver, Zen, Rio, those are all brands or models of MP3 players.

I guess the easiest analogy to make is you know how before there was either betamax or VHS? MP3 is a file format, as opposed to a WAV file. Then once you decide you want a VHS player, you have an assortment of models to choose from, like Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc., which is like being able to choose from an iPod or Rio for an MP3 player. (Sorry, I don't know if that helps any! I might've just made it more confusing!)

Anyhow, a lot of these players play various formats, not just MP3, but I think because MP3 is the most common, well-known one, people just refer to all of these machines as MP3 players.

Back to OP -- Creative has other models besides the Zen that are smaller, with less memory, but still more than adequate. I actually have another Creative MP3 called a MuVo. It's older and doesn't have nearly as many features, but it's so tiny! You can actually just plug it directly into the USB port without a cable. BF uses the MuVo now that I have my Zen. In any case, we've been happy with both of these products by Creative, so it might be worth checking out.

I too bought the Creative Zen touch based on battery power.

Zen's 24 hour battery?

iPod doesn't even come close.

OK, I have a free one (generic) that I use to demonstrate to people what an MP3 player is. It was free with purchase of something I bought on-line.

We use a RIO VOLT; we write it out to a CD and it works great (esp in our son's JEEP Stroller... 2 hours of Happy Music and std batteries-long life.

I also have an Motorolla MPx220 using Windows MobilePC. It has a built in MP3 player- no headphones though) This way we can all listen, and since the cell phone is a part of my hand.....

PS, Stinkerbelle, Hi- did you see the Diaper thread ;)...

:jumping2:

Does anyone have a Sony. I've been looking at these and they seem nice. Any reason why they're better or worse?

Love, love, love my Dell DJ. I have the 20gb one. Very easy to use. The software is pretty easy to work with, too.

I have a Sandisk, and I love mine. It is only 256, though. We just bought my cousin a Sandisk, too. Hers is 512 and was around 70$ I believe. They stopped making my version, though, so my cousin's is the newer version and its bigger, but it was cheaper than mine. If you go to Best Buy they have I think it is a 2-year replacement guarantee (or whatever its called) for 10$.

I don't have one, but I just wanted to caution you to do some research before picking one up (hopefully someone here on the DIS can help). I was reading about the new Sony, I can't remember the name of the model, and it seems cool and I think is supposed to have good sound quality, but I think they have some kind of proprietary format where you might have very limited choices as to where you can download music from. (Kind of like how years ago there was VHS vs. Beta, which was a Sony format, and VHS won...)

However, I don't have all the details, but I just remember being a little leery about it since normally all I do is download music from CDs I own. Hope someone here can share firsthand experience!
