Not knowing Florida grocery stores at all, which one would you choose for better prices, good selection, and quality fruit?

Winn Dixie

or

Publix

or is there another one closeby to WDW that would be better? (Not a big Costco/Sam's Club quantity type store though)

Thank you!!!

I'd go with Publix. I live in the general area, and I avoid Winn Dixie as much as possible.

Publix is almost always higher quality selections, they both have about the same amount of selections, and Winn Dixie normally will have better prices.

We almost always shops at Publix unless we are looking for beef, Winn Dixie still has better beef than Publix.

i totally agree with this!!

I saw in the "Unofficial" guide that they compared WD, Publix and Goodling and Publix was cheaper..

I love Publix...clean and well stocked!

We stopped at the Winn Dixie
11957 South Apoka-Vineland Rd
open daily 6am - midnight
last week.
I got the vitamin water for $1 per bottle. We didn't need much, just some water and OJ for the room. I had sent away for a winn dixie discount card last year, but never used it until last week.
We ate at the Sizzler and had a great steak dinner for $9.99.....then we checked in at All Star Music and relaxed in the room since it was pouring...

Is W.D. more crowded or ??? Just curious why you'd 'avoid' it! :rolleyes1

I'm just looking for bare minimums, smallest bottle/box of laundry detergent, milk, bagels, fruit, bottled water.

:dance3:

I don't shop at the ones by Disney but in my neighborhood Winn Dixie is cheaper but Publix is nicer.

Crowded? No, not really. It just tends to be not as clean, and Publix has much nicer produce. It also is more organized (in my opinion). Overall, I just have better shopping experiences in Publix.

If the Publix is much more out of the way, Winn Dixie would work just as well. :)

I only go to Publix around here. I have been to Winn Dixies in Alabama (where I grew up) and wouldn't go back to one unless I had to. Near WDW, you'll find a Publix about every 5 miles. They are always clean and have good sales.

I like Publix, personally. We went to Winn-Dixie once and were not impressed. Publix has always had a nice selection at a pretty reasonable price. We usually go to the Publix in the Poinciana Place center, on the corner of US 192 and 535

I have never..repeat..NEVER gone into a nice WD. I went into a brand new one a few times because my office was next door..still didn't look clean...just very dingy and yucky

I don't know..just a mental thing..I can't even bring myself to go to our local one for meat because it is really old :confused3

Thank you all! Publix it is! I can even see the sales flyer from home and make my list in advance!

Does anyone know offhand if they generally carry:

Entenmanns donuts
Sara Lee Bagels
Atkin's 'diet' products

and

Liquor? (I don't know if FL sells or doesn't sell alcohol in grocery stores?)

Yes, I'm a bit picky and a compulsive planner! :lmao:

Publix. Quality is better and it is well worth the few extra cents you might pay.
I will only go to Winn Dixie for items that are dry goods.
yes to all but liquor. THey sell wine, wine coolers and beer but no hard liquor.

There is at least one Publix on the west end of 192 (near 27) that has a liquor store. I don't know about the others. I'm pretty sure I've seen Sara Lee and Entenmanns, don't know about Atkins.

Liquor? (I don't know if FL sells or doesn't sell alcohol in grocery stores?)

Entenmans - yes
Sara Lee Bagels - yes
Atkins - select items

no liquor is sold in grocery stores (except Albertsons) Beer and Wine only

Entenmanns, yes, and every few weeks they are on sale Buy 1/Get 1 free.

Sara Lee bagels, I can't say for sure, but they have Thomas's bagels, and they're pretty good!

Atkins stuff, Yes!

Liquor... I don't know. I know you can get beer, wine, and pre-mixed wine-coolerish drinks. Bottles of real liquor (rum, etc) I can't say. The Publix I shop at does not sell bottles of hard liquor, but they do have a great selection of the other things I mentioned.

Most Publix's still dont' serve liquor however a lot of the larger one's are starting to open liquor stores next to them, similar to Winn Dixie's and the like. I don't know if the one you're going to has it, but some do.

And I still think Winn Dixie has much better beef than Publix :)

I avoid Winn Dixie because the ones I have been to have not been clean as well as some problems I saw at my local WD with personal habits of some of the deli workers. Things like coughing into their hands and then handling food without changing gloves and treating deaf customers poorly. And reporting it to the manager did not change it at all.

Thank you SO much everyone!

How do you like my combination? Donuts and Atkins - what a winning match! :rotfl:

I guess I'm just in for 'cooler-ish' type of cocktails so I'll be a-ok with Publix. (again, so NOT on my diet..... oh well, I'll be on vacation! )

And Colsun39, when I need beef in the future in FL, I'll make sure I go to WD and think of you! ;)
