Which insect repellant do you use on the baby at Vero?

We're going to Vero for the first time in August. I'm worried about my niece who will be 2 years old. What do you use on the kids to protect them from the mosquitos? Are the noseems only around during sunrise and sunset?

Thanks

Avon makes one skin so soft that is good for babies. But I have also bought the family "off" with the LOWEST number in deet.

When my son was a baby I would spray his clothes instead of on him. It seemed to work. But the bugs are not bad up here.

I would check with your doctor too. See if there is anything new.

I can't speak to the type, but the "noseems" are bad in the summer especially at night. We were there in May and it was pleasant at night then, but been there in late June when it was very bad.

It wasn't at Vero, but we used the Avon product with sunscreen and bug repellent on DS 18 months at WDW on our trip last month and it worked great. He has really sensitive skin and the plain sunscreen I had brought made him break out, but the Avon didn't bother him at all.

We've had good success with the Avon bug repellant products as well, including the sunscreen with bug repellant in it. Smells much better than Deet products to me, not so icky.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just read some of the old Vero Beach reports and it sounds like the summer can be really bad.
I spent very little time on the beach. It seem like I got about 20 bites the first Thursday when we were by the pool during the day and the next 80+ bites in the beach cottage. My family got a few bites but not like me. I used insect repellant with DEET but the second Thursday, I did not put any on after I took a shower in the evening.
I'm going to play it safe and change our reservations to stay onsite instead.

Thanks again

Funny thing is I have heard all the 'bug reports' at Vero but afetr 6 visits I have never seen or experienced them and yes I have been there in the summer. :sunny:

Maybe Im just lucky or maybe sour! :rotfl2:

There is a new repellant on the market called Picardin." It is less toxic than DEET and works fairly well. Walmart and Target carry some of the new products that use Picardin; what I bought was either made by Off! or Cutters. You'll need to read the "active ingredient" list on the bottle to see if it uses Picardin.

I read about the stuff in COnsumer Reports. It is lighter, not sticky, not stinky, and way less toxic than DEET. Seems it would be a good choice for a 2-year-old.

Have fun!

We use a 50-50 solution of regular Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil and water. It's inexpensive and works well for us, and we occasionally have pretty bad mosquito infestations.

If you google insect repellants, you will find some scientific research that says Skin So Soft does not work, or doesn't last as long as commercial products...but it's worked fine for us for 30 years. I'm always a little sceptical of those studies, because if you read the fine print, you often find they're funded by the brand they liked the best.

Great point about the Picardin, it works very well. The odor is a bit strong. But the bugs stay away.
