We're looking at booking 3 family suites with verandahs, is there a deck that's better then the others? why are the higher decks more expensive?

The perceived notion that "higher is better". Originally comes from the "golden days" of ship travel where upper classes had rooms higher on the ship than the lower classes did. And, because of this perception, people will pay more for higher, so cruiselines will put their better rooms higher up onboard and, thus, can charge more.

I will point out that on deck 10, not all the verandah dividers open between adjoining staterooms.

I liked deck 7. Whether going up or down - could always use the stairs.

The ceiling is lower on Deck 5. Didn't bother me since I and my wife are vertically challenged. But that may be a concern for taller persons.

Fixed that for you. :thumbsup2 I'm 5'7 and my husband is 6'1... it would drive us batty!

Mid ship mid deck is best but the fantasy is a great ship and most rooms are excellent.

Cruisers do not pay for history, a cruise us not Antique, so posters saying its a historic issue are wrong, people pay for value for money, they do not pay extra for history as one deck is the posh deck and one steerage.

Two things prove this,

  • When people are offered an upgrade they do not refuse it if it's a higher deck.
  • The people saying higher is not better, would on first day of release book those very rooms if the price was the same for all cabins.
Cruise budget and only cruise budget dictates where you book what you are prepared to spend.

Finally where does everyone spend there sea days? The higher pool decks! So even people in lower deck rooms spend a higher percentage of their day time on the top decks then their cabins.

Verandah rooms are safer as in the unlikely event if an emergency there are two exits.

We were in a family balcony (4A) on the Fantasy in 2013. We were on deck 10 and I wouldn't book that deck again. We were directly under the pool deck. Every morning we were awakened by the sound of metal chairs being drug along the deck. It was annoying. There also was an overhang to the balcony that made taking pictures difficult.

All that being said, we loved the family balcony cabin. The round shower and rain head are worth the extra $$$ alone!

Very interesting and thank you for sharing. I love all the insight you provide.

Personally I like 6-7. Close enough to all decks to use the stairs but staterooms above and below most rooms. I did NOT like 10! I didn't like the overhang from the pool deck.

We liked deck 9 on the Dream which is basically the same layout as the Fantasy. WE had a an aft room with a verandha and loved it, second room from the rear of the ship, super quiet hallway, hardly any foot traffic.

Just a few steps from the aft elevators and stairs. Just two flights up and you are in Cabanas buffet with the drink stations and easy access to the pool deck.

Take the elevator down to deck 5 and it is a real short walk to the Oceanner lab and kids club. One more level down and you are in the nighclub distric and one deck down to deck 3 and you are in Animators Palate. I think aft is a great location because of all this.

Also, the higher up deck can see further out on the horizon if you bring binoculars, never know what ship might sail past if this is an interest of yours.

But, I would avoid deck 10, I heard you can sometimes hear noises from the deck above which is the pool deck and Cabanas.

We have always stayed on deck 6 and loved it. But I also try to get the same room each cruise, so I haven't ventured any further up or down for staterooms.

My wife and I were on a kidless cruise so we really enjoyed deck 5. We spent most of our time inside on decks 3 and 4 and most of our time outside on deck 4. So deck 5 was perfect for us.

Deck 8 was perfect, walks were reasonable when elevators packed. Away from the noise below and above.. And watched the fireworks from our verandah... A unique experience,

With three kids, we really like being close (that is, no waiting for an elevator ride) to Cabanas, the pools and the soda/coffee machines.

Accordingly, we booked just below the pool deck on our first Disney Cruise on the Magic. However, we will never make that mistake again. Although the location was great, the early morning noise from the dragging of lounge chairs on the pool deck was awful.

So on our last two cruises on the Fantasy, we stayed on Deck 9 midship. We had the buffer of a floor of staterooms above us (no pool deck noise!) and an easy walk up the stairs to the pool deck and Cabanas without a wait for the elevator. For us, it was perfect.
