Too many planes are crashing! I need to find an alternative.

we did a QM2 trip to get home after a cruise. Price of a balcony cabin was about the same as business class (first class) flight for two. BUT 6 days versus 7 or so hours ....

That’s a really ridiculous thing to say. We just had the first domestic passenger accident with fatalities, in roughly 15 years.

Please don’t be dismissive of my feelings. I have every right to feel this way. Including the recent incident in the U.S., four plane crashes have occurred in the past six months. Rather than calling me ridiculous, a little empathy would have been more appropriate. When events like this happen, especially after a long period without major accidents, it is natural to feel shaken. Everyone processes these things differently, and my feelings are valid. I hope you learn to respect others' emotions instead of disregarding them. I simply asked so I know what my options are! 🪄

Sometimes harvesting facts make you feel better. There has been one commercial domestic incident in 15 years involving fatalities. You are of much greater risk of having life-threatening accident or injury on a two week cruise.

I did a month long cruise in October. Eight people passed away on that cruise… and it’s completely normal. Most were do to age/ health but one person slipped and hit their head while jogging on the sports deck, and another was hit by a car at port.

You are not informing me of any information I don’t already know! What’s your point in telling me that? Did that make you feel better?

Under normal situations risk of death on a two week cruise across the transatlantic would be far higher then a 8 hour commercial flight across.

If you know these to be the facts then you train your feelings to match the facts. You dont go with your feelings even if you know they are wrong. That only leads to bad outcomes. For you and for others.

In saying that the way the usa is turning the facts may change. Maybe this new administration truly cant be trusted to fly you home without elevated risk. If so then perhaps a cruise is the rational outcome if you have the extended time to come back.

OP, don’t feel bad about not wanting to fly home. I am the same way. And we are not alone. I was talking about this with one of our favorite servers on the fantasy, who had done several transatlantic cruises. He said multiple people were taking another cruise line’s transatlantic sailing back home to the US. He said a lot of people would book royal caribbean!

This is getting sillier. Transatlantic cruises are scheduled almost exclusively to reposition the ship. If your server has done them, then he/she was working the Magic or Dream when it was being moved between Florida and Europe.

Almost all these cruises are scheduled intentionally during the off season, including the Hurricane season. Because they’re pleasure cruises, they take twice as long to get back vs. traveling nonstop.

The number of people taking these cruises because they’re afraid to fly is low - probably a grand total of zero on most cruises.

You know there are zero people taking another transatlantic home? How?

Our server was the one who told me about taking another transatlantic cruise back to the US. He was asking if we were doing the transatlantic on the fantasy since we sail so much. I told him no because I didn’t want to have to fly home. He then told me about catching another transatlantic home. He said he had met multiple other cruisers who were doing the same thing. For the same reason. He said royal Caribbean was a solid choice. Just had to line up the dates. This was not something I had ever even considered.

Seabourn has some. Like a person mentioned they are usually repositioning cruises which means lower port stops and longer cruise with more sea days.

I think Seabourn usually goes to Miami in the route you're talking about. Just as an example they've got a 14-day Lisbon to Miami 2 port stops rest being sea days in December 2026 (just using this as an example)

While I don't agree with the commentary about how you feel about a flight right now (meaning I understand how you feel and it doesn't need to be the focus of the thread) do take into consideration the rough waters of the Atlantic and keep in mind hurricane season. I don't say that because of a cruise ship disaster but how the plans could change based on an impending weather even with a cruise having to divert from it or how you might feel with rougher waters. That's all something to consider even if you had no reservations about a plane and were just asking about a transatlantic cruise.

1) it’s been at least two decades since I’ve met a server who lived in the USA.
2) Disney and all other cruise lines cover the cost of travel to/from the ship, during the server’s contract.
3) Servers make around $30k pretax, including tips, on an annual basis. There’s absolutely no way somebody with that meager income is taking another transatlantic cruise home because they’re afraid to fly. Especially when those cruises take two weeks, and they only get 4-8 weeks off in between contracts. Alas, few cruise employeee can actually afford to take a cruise.

We’re manufacturing things here.

I didn’t comment on feelings rather the comment “too many planes are crashing.”
