Which car should I rent?

For our upcoming roadtrip we'll be driving down highway 1 along the coast for 3/4 days. Should we save our money and just go with the cheapest car wich is £112, get a SUV as being high up will be good for looking at the view which would be £156, or get a convertible because its California which is £164.

What does everyone think?

Book at the right time with an offer you could get the convertable a lot cheaper, for our trip next month they were very cheap(maybe they don't rent as well in winter months)
Not an option for us can't get DW to ride in one.

When do you think a good time is to book? We are renting it on March 30th. I think dropping it off in a different place is putting the price up.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago when I booked mine 7 seater Full size SUV, 7 nights for £125.
A bit late for that deal now.
Give me the details I will look, done 1 way rentals to the Port and back after cruise, never been charged any extra, unless you are dropping in another state are you?

Not easy getting deals off airports, you are limited with companies who will provide quotes, Alamo Brit guide rate and USrentacar were best 2 rates, nothing cheap. Better if you can do like SFO to LAX then you can use anyone like Netflights for example who would be cheaper with 5% Quidco. Probably even cheaper with a bit of searching.

How many of you are travelling and how much luggage will you have? If I was travelling with just my GF then we would go for a convertible!

What kind of temperatures will it be when you go? The reason I ask is we have a convertible and they can be really uncomfortable if its very hot especially if you sit in traffic.

But then we'd have to add on the cost of getting to the airport and the time it took so I think we'll bite the bullet and go with the closest place to rent. It was USrentacar that I was looking at.

We are going at the beginning of April. I'm wondering if it'll be the opposite and be cold on the coast road as it'll be very windy.

When I've been to SF/LA in spring we've had pleasant(ish) weather but some rain.

I'd go for SUV as I'd love to drive a huge american car! Convertibles jsut don;t hold much appeal to me for some reason.

Are ever planning on kids? I voted convertible and I have never ridden in one and as it is california. Now I have kids for the next 20 years we need to hire a bus to cart all their crap LOL. It's a great drive though.

Oh definitely the convertible. Wish DH and I had hired one on our hols before children.

I agree. One of our cars is a convertible and even in the UK it's also very easy to get sunburnt when the top is down.

I'd go for the convertible always wanted to get one of these. Plus if you plan on having kids soon etc you wouldn't be able to get one once you have them.

Having driven down the PCH I would say go for the SUV as it will give you better views and also be more comfortable for the length of time you will be in the car
