This is our first time at the fort and will not have a rental car or golfcart. Which area should we request to be in for close proximity to everything? Also, what is the best way to make a request, and how close to our arrival date should we make the request?:confused3

It's totally a matter of personal preference. The best thing you can do is to look at a map of FW, see what you're most interested in being close to, and requesting that.

Having said that, loop 2100 is closest to the center of FW, and also is right next door to loop 1100 which has a comfort station, in case you need to do laundry. With 2100 being closest to the center of FW (relative to the other cabin loops), you'll be closest to the main pool, the camp fire, etc. However, if I'm counting right, you'll be there in November and swimming may or may not be in your plans.

There also is a smaller "cabin pool", that has several loops right next to it - much more near to that pool than 2100 is to the main pool. Again, though, you may not be swimming depending on the weather.

Finally, loop 2800 is closest to the outpost, where you catch the bus to all the parks other than MK and also to DTD. Without a golf cart or car, it's possible to walk to the outpost from 2800.

NOW, having said all of that, FW has an internal bus system that works fine. Regardless of which cabin loop you stay in, you'll likely be taking the internal busses to the marina to go to the MK or to the settlement to go to Trails End. You'll also probably be taking it to the outpost from most loops. There are bus stops located conveniently to all loops.

The map of FW available on allears.net is helpful in figuring all this out.

Have a great trip!

2100 would be my family's preference, considering it is an easy walk from there to the meadows area. As you'll see on the map, there aren't any cabins within (easy) walking distance to the Marina or Settlement. But the bus system works great, IMO.
You can have your request noted on your reservation anytime. You can also try faxing it to the fort a few days before arrival. The fax number is on one of the sticky threads here I think.
If you do make a special request like that, I would not use online checkin.
