My SIL is looking to get a couple for my DN, but would like to wait closer to Christmas to purchase any. Will they all sell out, or will she still have alot of options??

The ones that will sell out could be Mia she is only available this year, Samantha because she is going into retriement & maybe her friend Nellie. These once they are gone are gone. I'm sure some go on back order. I would think that maybe Kit & her stuff because of the movie.

Mia should definitely sell out before Christmas because she is the 2008 Girl of the Year doll. Samantha and Nellie are being "archived" so they will probably be gone (and not coming back). Not sure about the others.

You must have faster fingers than me, I was typing around the same time and said just about the same thing!

I usually try to order anything AG in October or early November. You just don't want to chance something selling out or being on backorder. There is a $10 off $30 code right now. If your niece wants anything for MIA, her mom should order it soon- doll, clothing, or accessories.

Some of the Samantha stuff is already sold out--imagine my disappointment when I had it all in the cart, stepped away to deal with something else returned and the dresser was sold out! I am a bit bummed since Samantha is DD's Doll. We have many things, but to have to complete it all under the wire is insane. I am a bit bitter that they chose to "retire" this set with very little notice:mad: . At least with the "doll of the year" you know you will be under some deadlines and budget accordingly. With Christmas just around the corner and all the other facts of life we deal with when budgeting, a full $500+ was not in the plans. Honestly, I can't just give her some doll clothes and accessories for Christmas, so even though I have to buy it all now I will have to spread it out over a few different holidays. I really hate being under the wire to get things--can you tell!:rotfl:

I agree, I am not too happy with the short-notice retirement announcement. Also, with Samantha (traditionally) as one of the more popular historical dolls, why did they decide to retire her and not a less-popular doll? I have a LOT of Samantha stuff from when I was growing up, and I loved knowing that I could always add to the collection later on, but now the pressure is on. My Samantha doll is in shambles (I got her when I was 7, so she's not in great shape...) and I had been hoping to order a new collectors Sam eventually...now I have to decide if I want it or not pronto!:scared:

Has anyone found out when they are actually retiring Samantha? I can't find a date online other than the fact that this is "the last holiday" to bring them home.

I suppose it is a good business venture for them, as I'm sure they will sell tons of Samantha stuff that they wouldn't have sold otherwise, but I'm not thrilled with the announcement.

I found it very odd that the catalog we just got (with the announcment of the Samantha retirement) has a NEW dress for Samantha!!!

Check the AG website again. The dresser/commode is now on backorder so you can still get it! At least it was a few hours ago.

Thanks, it is on backorder and I did get it for her--I guess that completes it unless she bats her eyes at daddy and gets the table, treats and lemonade set! LOL

Only as supplies last...so if the doll sells out, she won't be available anymore. :(

My DD's "just like me" doll looks just like Sam, so we wouldn't buy her the doll, but I'd like to buy some of the accessories, but I doubt I will now. I'm not going to put out that much money at one time, just to get it before it's gone.

Personally I think it is a ploy to increse sales in a market that is weak and for items that are frivolous. Honestly, I would have spent $100 tops but that has increased 5x as a result of the announcement--so it obviously worked--and there are a few items on backorder as well (trunk and commode). I grabbed the bike last summer on sale, and that with a new item for Julie and for Samantha was going to be it for this Christmas. DH and I have agreed to not do anything for one another for Christmas as a result of this purchase.

My DD8--who has NEVER played with dolls--is asking for an AG doll this year. If I get her Mia now and she changes her mind in December, will the doll sell well on ebay? I'm not trying to make a profit or anything, I just want to recoup my money if she changes her mind.

If you buy Mia and later decide you don't want her, you should be able to recoup most of your cost by reselling her. I might try Craigslist before Ebay (no fees). I have heard the QVC will be offering Mia on the Oct. 25th show, so you might want to look into that.

Around Christmas last year Nicki dolls (sold out) were selling for about $200. I seriously considered selling mine, as it is a frivolous item, but I hung onto her. Usually the retired dolls are worth more than they sold for, although you may have to wait a little while for the price to escalate. This being said, I have no idea how ebay fees work, so that could be a factor. I know AG has traditionally been very good with returns, so you may be able to return a doll after it has been retired.

I work near the American Girl store in NYC and was talking to an employee there about my displeasure that they were retireing Samantha as we had specificallly bought my niece a regular doll and not a girl of the year doll so that we wouldn't have to worry about this happening.

She told us that it's not really a retirement per say, but is more like when Disney sends their films back to the vault. They will bring her back down the line for limited periods of time, and then send her back to the vault again. She just won't be available on a daily basis.

I don't know how true that is, but that's what they told me in the store. I'm still annoyed, especially as I was once told that Samantha was their most popular doll. I don't understand the intelligence of retiring one of your best sellers.

I wouldn't worry about recouping my cost on Mia or any other girl of the year doll. They usually sell much better on E-bay once they're sold out on the AG website. Her accessories are sold out and they're already selling for almost twice what they cost to begin with. AG GOY dolls are always a wise investment when kept in new/mint condition. It also helps to have the original box. Hope this helps! :)

I was just going to post this. Frankly with free shipping I'm a bit surprised that Mia didn't sell out already (Nicki sold out at this time last year after free shipping). She should be gone soon and then my extra doll will go on ebay ;) No worries you'll recoup your cost and then some!
